Thursday, July 24, 2025, has seen widespread disruptions for users of Yahoo Mail and AOL Mail, with thousands reporting issues accessing their email services. The outages, which began in the morning, have left many users unable to send, receive, or even log into their accounts, causing significant inconvenience for both personal and business communications.
According to outage tracking website Down Detector, reports of Yahoo Mail issues started surfacing around 10:00 a.m. ET, quickly escalating to over 10,000 reported incidents by the afternoon. AOL Mail users also experienced a surge in problems, with more than 6,000 reports recorded starting around 11:00 a.m. ET, indicating a closely related or shared underlying cause for the two services. Tom’s Guide and USA Today both highlighted the significant number of affected users.
Many Yahoo Mail users attempting to access their inboxes were greeted with a message stating, “We are experiencing some technical difficulties. Temporary Error: 15.” Yahoo’s own support documentation explains that “Temporary Error 15” typically indicates an issue that “will usually correct itself within a few minutes to a few hours.” However, as the day progressed, the persistence of the problem suggested a more substantial technical challenge.
Both Yahoo and AOL have acknowledged the ongoing issues. Yahoo’s help page currently displays a message stating, “We are aware some users are experiencing issues accessing their Yahoo Mail, or displaying their mailbox. We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience as our engineers work to remedy this concern.” (Yahoo Help). Similarly, AOL’s help page and its customer service account on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed, “We are aware some users are experiencing issues accessing their AOL Mail… We are actively investigating this issue and will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.” (TechRadar).
The outage has led to considerable frustration among users. Many have taken to social media platforms like X to express their inability to perform critical tasks, such as receiving multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes for other services or managing business communications. One user on X lamented, “Yahoo email is so unreliable. Time to find something better, and that shouldn’t be too hard,” reflecting a broader sentiment of exasperation. While the outage primarily affects web and desktop access, some users reported inconsistent experiences, with AOL mail, for instance, reportedly working on iPhones for some individuals despite being down online. The impact on small businesses, which may lack robust backup systems, is particularly concerning.
The simultaneous nature of the outages for both Yahoo and AOL points to a shared underlying infrastructure. Given that the two companies have merged, it is highly probable that a technical issue affecting their common systems is responsible for the widespread disruption. As of the latest updates, neither company has provided a specific timeframe for when services are expected to be fully restored, nor have they detailed the exact cause of the technical difficulties. Users are advised to monitor official communication channels for the most current information.
