The Dallas Wings are set to face the reigning WNBA champion New York Liberty for the second time in a week, this time on the Liberty’s home court. After a four-game homestand, the Wings (8-21) travel to the Barclays Center on Tuesday, August 5, for a 6 p.m. CT tip-off against a Liberty team (18-10) looking to even the season series.
This matchup follows a surprising 92-82 victory for the Wings on July 28 in Arlington, Texas. In that game, Dallas guard Arike Ogunbowale delivered a historic performance, scoring 20 points and setting a career and franchise record with 14 assists. According to the Dallas Wings, Ogunbowale became the first player in franchise history to record a points-assists double-double in a single half, tallying 15 points and 10 assists before halftime. Rookie sensation Paige Bueckers also contributed 20 points in the win.
The Liberty, who were playing without reigning MVP Breanna Stewart due to a right leg injury, struggled to keep pace early. Dallas built a commanding 63-36 lead by halftime. However, the Liberty mounted a fierce comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wings 20-3 in the first eight and a half minutes to close the gap to 88-82. Dallas ultimately held on, securing the win with late-game free throws, as reported by ESPN. Jonquel Jones led New York with 18 points, while Sabrina Ionescu added 17.
Since that meeting, both teams have had mixed results. The Wings are coming off an 88-78 home loss to the Indiana Fever, though Bueckers continued her stellar play with a team-high 22 points. The Liberty, meanwhile, snapped a four-game losing streak with an impressive 87-78 road win against the Connecticut Sun, fueled by a 36-point explosion from Ionescu.
The Liberty will once again be without key players for the rematch. Breanna Stewart remains out, along with Kennedy Burke and Nyara Sabally, according to the latest WNBA injury reports. For the Wings, guard Ty Harris is out with a left knee injury, and forward Myisha Hines-Allen is listed as questionable with a left ankle issue.
The Wings’ roster has seen significant changes since the last game. On Sunday, the team announced a trade sending guard DiJonai Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx. In return, Dallas acquired third-year forward Diamond Miller, seventh-year guard Karlie Samuelson, and a 2027 second-round draft pick. To make room, the Wings waived center Teaira McCowan. Miller, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft and an All-Rookie Team honoree, is a notable addition. In 2025, she leads all forwards in three-point shooting accuracy at 53.8%.
All eyes will be on the Wings’ dynamic backcourt of Ogunbowale and Bueckers. Bueckers was recently named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for July, her second consecutive month winning the award. She is the only player in the league to rank in the top 10 in points (18.2), assists (5.2), and steals (1.8) per game for the month of July. Her performance has been a bright spot for Dallas and has helped draw significant crowds, including a near-record 17,857 fans for the recent game against the Fever at American Airlines Center.
With the all-time series between the two franchises sitting at a narrow 42-41 in favor of Dallas, Tuesday’s game is a pivotal one. The Liberty will be determined to defend their home court and avenge last week’s loss, while the Wings will look to prove their victory was no fluke and integrate their new forward into the lineup. The teams will meet for a final time this season on August 8 in Dallas.
