UTC Campus Receives ‘All Clear’ After Active Shooter Alert Sparks Lockdown

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) campus was placed on high alert Thursday afternoon following a report of a possible active shooter, prompting a campus-wide lockdown and a massive law enforcement response before officials gave an “all clear” notice about an hour later.

The incident began at 12:42 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2025, when the university issued a UTC-ALERT to students and staff. The message read: “Possible active shooter in University Center or Library. Run. Hide. fight. More info forthcoming,” as reported by WTVC. The urgent directive initiated immediate shelter-in-place protocols across the campus, which is home to over 11,000 students.

A large presence of Chattanooga Police Department officers and other law enforcement agencies quickly converged on the campus, focusing their investigation on the University Center and the library. A spokeswoman for the Chattanooga Police Department confirmed that the response was triggered by a shots-fired call. However, she stated that as of 1:00 p.m., police had not located any victims on campus.

During the lockdown, students and faculty followed the emergency procedures, hiding in classrooms, offices, and other secure locations. The tense atmosphere was palpable as heavily armed officers swept through the buildings. One witness told WTVC that as students were eventually allowed to file out of the library, they were met by police with guns drawn, who told them, “this is not a drill.”

Just before 2:00 p.m., the university provided the much-anticipated resolution. An official UTC RAVE Alert posted on the university’s website declared the situation resolved. “UTC-ALERT: The UTC campus is ALL CLEAR. The lockdown has been lifted. Law enforcement found no evidence of a threat,” the message stated. The university took precautionary measures following the scare, canceling all remaining classes and activities for the day.

The all-clear announcement continued, “All classes & activities are cancelled until 8/22 at 8:00 AM. All students and non-essential employees may leave campus for the day.” This decision allowed the campus community time to decompress after the stressful event and enabled law enforcement to ensure the area was completely secure.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, a key institution within the city of Chattanooga, is a comprehensive, community-engaged campus of the University of Tennessee System. The swift and coordinated response from university officials and local law enforcement was critical in managing the situation and ensuring the safety of everyone on campus. While the alert was ultimately deemed a false alarm, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the preparedness protocols in place at educational institutions for such potential threats. Normal campus operations are scheduled to resume Friday morning.
