An early morning accident on Friday, July 11, 2025, saw a tractor-trailer cab crash through a concrete barrier on the Delaware Memorial Bridge and plunge into the Delaware River, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation. The incident, which occurred around 3:40 a.m. on the southbound span heading into Delaware, has led to significant traffic disruptions and an ongoing investigation.
According to the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA), a Bobtail Tractor – a tractor-trailer cab without a trailer – was traveling southbound on I-295 when it veered across three lanes of traffic. The vehicle then struck a concrete pad near the Delaware anchorage before crashing into a concrete wall. The impact caused the wall to collapse, sending the tractor careening into the river below. Officials confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash, which took place on the downslope of the Delaware-bound bridge. The number of occupants in the vehicle remains unknown, and the condition of the driver has not yet been released, though the cab was later located in approximately 20 feet of water. Delaware Online and NBC Philadelphia reported on the unfolding situation.
Emergency crews swiftly responded to the scene, initiating an extensive search of the Delaware River. The multi-agency effort includes dive teams from New Castle County Emergency Management, the State of Delaware Special Operations Dive Team, the Delaware State Police Marine Unit/Dive Team, Wilmington Police, Holloway Terrace and Minquadale Fire Companies, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control (DNREC), Wilmington Fire Marine Unit, and U.S. Coast Guard Air and Marine units. Photos from Delaware Online showed emergency personnel and a Coast Guard helicopter involved in the search.
The accident has impacted traffic on the vital interstate connector. The left lane of the southbound span (heading into Delaware) remains closed for investigation, though the other three lanes have reopened. Motorists are advised to expect delays, particularly during peak travel times. The Delaware Memorial Bridge, operated by the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA), is a critical link between Delaware and New Jersey, carrying Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 40. It serves as the southernmost and largest fixed vehicular crossing of the Delaware River, handling over 100,000 vehicles daily as of 2024, according to Wikipedia and the Delaware Memorial Bridge official site.
The twin suspension bridge, with its first span opening in 1951 and the second in 1968, is a lasting memorial to soldiers from Delaware and New Jersey who lost their lives in various conflicts. The DRBA is currently undertaking a significant $93 million ship collision protection system project, involving the installation of eight stone-filled dolphins, expected to be completed by September 2025. Tolls on the bridge are collected one-way for southbound traffic, with current rates (as of April 1, 2025) at $6.00 cash and $5.00 for E-ZPass users. The incident remains under investigation by authorities. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
