SNL Wraps Historic 50th Season, Setting New Records and Eyeing Future Changes

As of July 26, 2025, the iconic sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live (SNL) has officially entered its summer hiatus. The show concluded its monumental 50th season on May 17, 2025, with Host Scarlett Johansson and Musical Guest Bad Bunny, marking a significant milestone in television history. This landmark season not only celebrated five decades of comedic excellence but also featured record-breaking performances and notable inductions, culminating in the highly anticipated SNL50: The Anniversary Special on February 16, 2025.

The 50th season kicked off on September 28, 2024, with Jean Smart making her hosting debut alongside musical guest Jelly Roll. The season also welcomed three new Featured Players to its cast: Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline. Throughout its run, Season 50 saw the return of several fan-favorite hosts. Nate Bargatze, whose "Washington’s Dream" sketch became a viral sensation in 2023, returned on October 5, 2024, to deliver a much-anticipated sequel. Ariana Grande, who previously pulled double duty as host and musical guest in 2016, hosted on October 12, 2024, with Stevie Nicks as the musical guest. John Mulaney, a former SNL writer, further solidified his place in the show’s history by hosting for his sixth time on November 2, 2024. The season finale on May 17, 2025, was particularly noteworthy as Scarlett Johansson hosted for her seventh time, setting a new record for the most hosting appearances by a woman, surpassing the previous records held by Tina Fey and Drew Barrymore. Other prominent hosts during Season 50 included Michael Keaton, Bill Burr, Charli XCX (who also pulled double duty as host and musical guest), Paul Mescal, Chris Rock (who broke his own record for the longest monologue), Timothée Chalamet (also pulling double duty), Shane Gillis, Lady Gaga (who likewise served as both host and musical guest), Mikey Madison, Jack Black, Jon Hamm, Quinta Brunson, and Walton Goggins. A highlight of the 50th season was the induction of Martin Short into the exclusive "Five-Timers Club" on December 21, 2024. This prestigious club, first introduced by Tom Hanks during his fifth hosting appearance on December 8, 1990, is reserved for individuals who have hosted the show five or more times. Alec Baldwin holds the overall record for most hosting stints with an impressive 17 appearances, followed closely by Steve Martin with 16. Recent inductees to the club include Woody Harrelson (February 25, 2023), Emma Stone (December 2, 2023), and Kristen Wiig (April 6, 2024). Notable former cast members who are also Five-Timers include Chevy Chase (8 times), Tina Fey (6 times), Bill Murray (5 times), and Will Ferrell (5 times). John Mulaney, a former writer, also joined the club with his sixth hosting gig. Interestingly, Paul Simon, despite being a recurring presence in Five-Timers Club sketches, has only hosted four times but has made numerous other appearances as a musical or special guest. For their efforts, hosts are reportedly compensated around $5,000 per episode. (Wikipedia)

Created by Lorne Michaels, Saturday Night Live premiered on October 11, 1975, under its original title "NBC’s Saturday Night." Broadcast live from Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, it has grown to become one of the longest-running network television programs in the United States. The show has received widespread critical acclaim, boasting an impressive collection of accolades including 95 Primetime Emmy Awards, 6 Writers Guild of America Awards, and 3 Peabody Awards. It holds the record for the most Emmy nominations for any television program, with over 305 nominations to date. Dave Grohl holds the record for the most musical guest appearances, having performed on the show 16 times. (Wikipedia)

As SNL looks ahead to Season 51, the cast lineup remains unconfirmed, leading to much speculation among fans. Kenan Thompson, the show’s longest-serving cast member, has hinted at significant changes for the upcoming season. There is also ongoing discussion regarding the potential departure of Colin Jost from the "Weekend Update" desk. Despite persistent rumors of his retirement, Lorne Michaels is expected to continue his role as the showrunner for Season 51, maintaining his pivotal influence over the series. While the future holds potential shifts in the cast, with Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney, and Chloe Troast having departed after Season 50, the enduring legacy of Saturday Night Live continues to captivate audiences, promising more of its unique blend of political satire, character-driven comedy, and live musical performances.
