Slumping Indiana Fever Look to Rebound Against Connecticut Sun Amid Injury Woes

The Indiana Fever, grappling with a challenging stretch of their season, will travel to Uncasville, Connecticut, to face the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, August 17. The matinee matchup, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET at Mohegan Sun Arena, features two teams with vastly different records but a shared need for a victory.

Indiana (18-16) enters the contest in a precarious position. Despite holding the third spot in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference and seventh in the overall league standings, the team is in the midst of its worst slump of the season. The Fever have lost two consecutive games and four of their last five, jeopardizing their playoff standing. Their recent defeats were narrow but concerning, falling 88-84 to the Washington Mystics and 81-80 to the Dallas Wings, both teams with losing records. The slide has seen their once-comfortable playoff cushion shrink, as they now sit just a game ahead of the eighth-place Seattle Storm.

A significant factor in the Fever’s recent struggles is the continued absence of superstar guard Caitlin Clark. The second-year phenom will miss her 13th consecutive game with a groin injury, and there remains no clear timetable for her return. The team’s backcourt depth has been further decimated by season-ending injuries to guards Aari McDonald (foot) and Sydney Colson (ACL). In response, the Fever recently signed 11-year veteran Odyssey Sims to a hardship contract to provide much-needed experience. After a quiet debut, Sims contributed 11 points and three assists in the loss to Washington, showing signs of settling in.

Without Clark, the offensive burden has fallen heavily on the shoulders of Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. Boston has been a consistent force, tallying 20 points and nine rebounds against the Mystics. Mitchell, who scored 24 points against Dallas, will need to be a primary playmaker for Indiana to get back on track. As a team, the Fever will need to focus on late-game execution, an area where they have faltered during their recent skid.

On the other side of the court, the Connecticut Sun (6-26) hold the WNBA’s worst record. However, they are not a team to be taken lightly, especially at home. The Sun recently snapped a five-game losing streak with a 71-62 victory over the Chicago Sky on Wednesday. While their season has been difficult, they have been more competitive lately, posting a 3-6 record over their last nine games.

The Sun are led by veteran center and future Hall of Famer Tina Charles, who averages a team-high 15.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She is complemented by guard Marina Mabrey, who contributes 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. In their recent win, Lëila Lacan stepped up with 17 points, while Charles added 15.

This game marks the fourth and final meeting between the two teams this season, with the Fever leading the series 2-1. Their most recent encounter was a month ago, an 85-77 Indiana victory in Boston where Mitchell led the Fever with 20 points. However, Clark was active for that contest, and her absence changes the dynamic significantly for Sunday’s game.

The game will be broadcast nationally on NBA TV and locally on FanDuel Sports Network Indiana and NBC Sports Boston. Fans can also stream the action on services such as FuboTV and DIRECTV, which offer free trials, according to MassLive. For the Fever, this is a critical opportunity to halt their slide and solidify their playoff hopes against a team they should, on paper, defeat. For the Sun, it’s a chance to play spoiler and continue building positive momentum to close out their season.
