An Emotional Homecoming to Studio 1A
Sheinelle Jones, co-host of the 3rd Hour of TODAY, made a poignant return to the show on September 5, 2025, after a nearly year-long absence. Her return follows the tragic passing of her husband, Uche Ojeh, in May. Jones sat down for a deeply personal and emotional interview with her colleague Savannah Guthrie, sharing her journey through grief and her family’s private battle.
Jones took a sabbatical from her role in December 2024 to care for Ojeh, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Ojeh passed away in May 2025 at the age of 45. During her return, Jones expressed the profound depth of her loss. “From a macro picture, how am I doing? My heart is shattered. My heart is shattered in a million pieces,” she shared with Guthrie. “The life that I’ve known since I was 19 is no more.” Despite the immense pain, she affirmed her resilience, stating, “In this moment, I’m okay, day to day, I’m okay… I’m here, I’m breathing and I’m okay.”
A Private Journey of Love and Loyalty
Throughout her husband’s illness, Jones and her family chose to keep his health struggle private. She explained that this decision was made to honor Ojeh’s wishes, as he was a deeply private person who did not choose the public spotlight. “He asked me, please, like, I want to handle this privately,” Jones revealed. “And he was so protective of us, the kids, over the years that it was my turn to be protective, and he was so loyal. So it was my turn to be loyal, and we honored that.”
This period of care and loss, which she has termed a “beautiful nightmare,” has been a testament to their enduring partnership. Jones is now navigating life as a single mother to their three children: son Kayin, 16, and 13-year-old twins, Clara and Uche Jr. “They’ve lost their dad, and I’m their mom. It sucks… I’m proud of my kids for how we’ve been able to try to pull through,” she said.
Remembering a Devoted Husband and Father
Sheinelle Jones and Uche Ojeh’s love story began when they met as students at Northwestern University. They were married for 17 years and built a life centered on family and faith. Colleagues and friends remember Ojeh as a remarkable man whose quiet strength and joyful spirit were a perfect complement to Jones. He was described as a humble and “wickedly funny” man who was deeply devoted to his Nigerian heritage and, above all, his children.
Her TODAY co-host Craig Melvin fondly recalled Ojeh’s dedication as a father. “He loved those kids more than anything else in this world, and was just so proud,” Melvin shared. “He was that dad that was on the sidelines of every soccer game, all of the concerts, recitals. He was that guy.”
A Supportive ‘Today’ Family
The TODAY show family has rallied around Jones, offering unwavering support throughout her ordeal. Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin announced her return on September 2, expressing their excitement to welcome her back. “There are no words for the pain we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children,” Guthrie had stated when Ojeh’s death was first announced. “Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him.”
It has been a challenging period for the hosts of the morning show, who have navigated several personal hardships as a close-knit team. As reported by digitaltrendstoday.com, Jones’s colleague Dylan Dreyer also recently announced her separation from her husband, Brian Fichera. These events highlight the deep personal bonds among the co-hosts as they support one another through life’s most difficult moments. Jones’s return marks a significant step in her healing process, and she hopes to offer a message of hope to others facing their own struggles.
