Seattle Sounders Face Formidable Paris Saint-Germain in Club World Cup Group Stage Finale

Seattle Sounders FC are set to conclude their Group B campaign in the inaugural 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, hosting French football powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at Lumen Field on Monday, June 23. The highly anticipated match, scheduled for 3 pm ET/12 pm PT, will be available for streaming on DAZN.com.

This summer marks the debut of an expanded FIFA Club World Cup, featuring 32 teams from six confederations competing for prestigious silverware and a share of an unprecedented $1 billion prize pool. The tournament culminates with the final on July 13 at MetLife Stadium.

Sounders’ Uphill Battle

The Seattle Sounders, who qualified for the tournament as the 2022 Concacaf Champions League champions, find themselves in a precarious position. After losing their first two group stage matches, they are all but mathematically eliminated from advancing to the knockout stage. Their path forward is incredibly narrow: they must secure a victory against PSG by at least three goals and simultaneously hope that Atlético Madrid suffers a defeat against Botafogo on the final group-stage matchday. Anything less will see their tournament journey end.

Despite their challenging results, the Sounders have shown resilience. In their opener, they narrowly fell 2-1 to Brazilian champions Botafogo, with Cristian Roldan’s goal sparking hopes of a comeback. They then faced Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, putting up a commendable fight in a 3-1 loss, highlighted by Albert Rusnák’s second-half strike. Head coach Brian Schmetzer’s squad will undoubtedly embrace the underdog role, aiming for a miraculous upset against one of Europe’s elite clubs.

PSG’s Clearer Path

Paris Saint-Germain, who secured their spot via the UEFA ranking pathway, enter the match with a much clearer route to the Round of 16. A win against Seattle would guarantee their progression, potentially as group winners. Even a draw could see the storied French club advance, though a loss would complicate their standing significantly.

PSG’s group stage performance has been mixed. They opened with a dominant 4-0 rout of Atlético Madrid but then suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Botafogo on Thursday, despite commanding 75% possession and registering 16 shots. Nevertheless, PSG remains a formidable force. Fresh off a stellar 2024-25 European season that saw them clinch four titles, including the Ligue 1 and Champions League crowns, they boast a roster brimming with world-class talent. Players like Vitinha, Achraf Hakimi, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are expected to lead the charge, making them strong favorites to dispatch the Sounders and secure their place in the next round.

As the group stage concludes, all eyes will be on Lumen Field to see if the Seattle Sounders can defy the odds or if Paris Saint-Germain will assert their dominance and advance in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
