Scottie Scheffler Claims 153rd Open Championship Title at Royal Portrush, Securing $3.1 Million Prize

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, continued his dominant season by clinching the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. His commanding performance culminated in a four-shot victory, adding the coveted Claret Jug to his growing collection of major titles. The tournament, held from July 17-20, 2025, featured a total prize fund of $17 million, with Scheffler taking home a substantial $3.1 million winner’s share.

Scheffler’s triumph at Royal Portrush marks his second major championship win of the year and his fourth career major, further solidifying his status as a generational talent in golf. He finished the tournament with an impressive 17-under 267, a score that left his competitors well behind. This victory also pushed his official career earnings to just shy of $100 million, with over $19 million earned in the current season alone, according to NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports. His consistent excellence and ability to perform under pressure have made him a formidable force on the PGA Tour.

The R&A, the organizing body of The Open, announced that the $17 million prize fund for the 2025 championship matched the record purse from 2024. While this is the highest purse in the event’s history, it is notably lower than the prize money offered at other major championships in 2025, such as the U.S. Open ($21.5 million) and the Masters ($21 million). Even some PGA Tour signature events typically carry purses of at least $20 million. This disparity highlights The Open’s unique position, where the prestige and historical significance of winning golf’s oldest major often outweigh the monetary reward. As CBS Sports noted, "The Open Championship is the paradigm of prize money not determining the importance of an event."

Beyond Scheffler’s dominant win, the leaderboard saw other notable performances. Harris English secured solo second place with a 13-under total, earning $1.759 million. Chris Gotterup, who recently won the Genesis Scottish Open, continued his strong form by finishing in solo third place at 12-under, taking home $1.128 million. Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Haotong Li tied for fourth place at 11-under, each receiving $730,667. Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, and Xander Schauffele tied for seventh at 10-under, earning $451,833 each. The full breakdown of payouts for all 70 professional golfers who made the cut was released by the PGA Tour and confirmed by multiple sources, including PGA TOUR.com and BetMGM.

Royal Portrush, a renowned links course in Northern Ireland, hosted The Open for the third time in its history, having previously done so in 1951 and 2019. Its return to the rota underscores its challenging layout and historical significance. The Open Championship, often referred to simply as "The Open," is unique among the four majors for always being played on a coastal links golf course, a tradition that connects it to the game’s origins in Scotland. The winner is officially named "The Champion Golfer of the Year," a title dating back to the inaugural event in 1860, and is presented with the iconic Claret Jug, a replica of which they keep for a year before returning it for the next champion. Scheffler’s victory at this historic venue further etches his name into golf’s storied annals.
