Sabalenka Outlasts Raducanu in Three-Hour Cincinnati Classic

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka emerged victorious from a monumental third-round clash against Emma Raducanu at the Cincinnati Open on Monday, clinching a dramatic 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) win in an epic contest that lasted three hours and nine minutes. The match, filled with high-quality tennis and remarkable resilience from both players, instantly became a highlight of the tournament.

The tone for the thrilling encounter was set early. Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, stormed out of the gates, winning the first eight points to take a swift 2-0 lead. However, Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, quickly found her rhythm, reeling off the next four games to seize control. Raducanu broke back to level the set, which eventually proceeded to a tiebreak. True to her recent form, Sabalenka dominated the breaker 7-3, extending what sources like Sky Sports report is a streak of 16 consecutive tiebreak wins.

Undeterred, Raducanu responded brilliantly in the second set. The 22-year-old Brit significantly elevated her service game, missing only five first serves throughout the set. She earned a crucial break in the seventh game and confidently served out the set, sealing it with a second-serve ace to level the match and force a decider.

The third set produced the most dramatic moments of the match, notably an incredible 23-minute eighth game. With the set on a knife’s edge, Raducanu’s serve came under immense pressure. She faced 13 deuces and saved four break points before finally holding in a spectacular display of grit. The marathon game brought the crowd to its feet, but the match was destined for another tiebreak. In the final showdown, Sabalenka’s experience under pressure shone through as she secured the victory 7-5 on her second match point.

For Raducanu, who was playing her first tournament with new coach Francis Roig, the performance was a strong signal of intent despite the loss, as she now turns her attention to the upcoming US Open. Sabalenka, meanwhile, advances to the fourth round, where she is set to face Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Maneiro booked her spot with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over Taylor Townsend.

Elsewhere in the tournament on Monday, August 11, there were several other key results. In the men’s draw, American Frances Tiafoe defeated Ugo Humbert in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. In a notable upset, 28th-seeded Alex Michelsen of the United States defeated Holger Rune. In the women’s singles, third-seeded Iga Swiatek advanced via walkover after her opponent, Marta Kostyuk, withdrew from their match. The day’s events, particularly the epic between Sabalenka and Raducanu, have set a high bar for the remainder of the Cincinnati Open, which runs through August 18.
