Phillies Overcome Yankees in High-Scoring Slugfest at Yankee Stadium

The Philadelphia Phillies unleashed a late-game offensive barrage to defeat the New York Yankees 12-5 in the opening game of their series at Yankee Stadium on Friday, July 25, 2025. What started as a tightly contested affair quickly turned into a showcase of Philadelphia’s potent lineup, highlighted by multiple home runs and a decisive nine-run rally over the final three innings.

The Yankees initially seized control, with solo home runs in the early frames. In the bottom of the first inning, Cody Bellinger launched his 19th homer of the season off Phillies starter Taijuan Walker, giving New York a 1-0 lead. The advantage was extended in the second when Austin Wells added his 15th solo shot, pushing the score to 2-0.

Philadelphia began to chip away in the fifth inning. After Trea Turner singled, Kyle Schwarber connected for his 35th home run of the year, a two-run blast to right-center field off Yankees starter Will Warren. This significant hit not only tied the game at 2-2 but also marked Schwarber’s 1,000th career hit, a notable milestone in his impressive career. However, the Yankees quickly reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth, with Giancarlo Stanton hitting his sixth solo homer of the season, making it 3-2.

The seventh inning proved to be a pivotal turning point for the Phillies. With runners on second and third, Nick Castellanos hit an RBI infield single, scoring Trea Turner and tying the game once more at 3-3. The momentum continued as J.T. Realmuto then stepped up and delivered a crucial go-ahead three-run home run to left-center, bringing home Castellanos and Schwarber and giving the Phillies a 6-3 lead. The Yankees attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh, with Anthony Volpe hitting a solo homer and Aaron Judge adding a sacrifice fly, narrowing the deficit to 6-5.

But the Phillies were far from done. In the top of the eighth, Kyle Schwarber struck again, launching his second home run of the game, a two-run shot that also scored Trea Turner, extending Philadelphia’s lead to 8-5. The ninth inning saw the Phillies put the game out of reach with a four-run explosion. Edmundo Sosa singled home Castellanos, followed by Bryson Stott’s two-run double that scored Sosa and M. Kepler. Finally, Trea Turner capped the scoring with an RBI triple, bringing the final tally to 12-5.

On the mound, Taijuan Walker started for the Phillies, allowing three earned runs on six hits, including three home runs, over 5.2 innings. Will Warren, the Yankees’ starter, gave up two earned runs on five hits and one home run through 5.2 innings, striking out seven. Both bullpens saw significant action, with the Phillies’ relievers holding the Yankees in check while New York’s bullpen struggled to contain Philadelphia’s late surge.

This victory improves the Phillies’ record to 58-44, keeping them firmly in contention for the National League East title. Their offense, which has been a key factor in their success, demonstrated its depth and power in this contest. For the Yankees, now 56-46, the loss underscores their recent struggles. Manager Aaron Boone and star Aaron Judge have both acknowledged the team’s defensive woes, which have led to costly unearned runs in recent games. The Yankees committed an error in this game, contributing to the Phillies’ seventh-inning rally, continuing a trend of defensive miscues that has plagued them since the All-Star break. As the series continues, the Yankees will look to tighten up their play and regain the form that saw them lead the AL East earlier in the season.
