The wait is almost over for fans of the irreverent, eagle-loving anti-hero. The second season of James Gunn’s acclaimed series, Peacemaker, is set to make its explosive return, and it’s already generating significant buzz with overwhelmingly positive early reviews. The new season will premiere exclusively on HBO Max on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Release Schedule and Episode Details
Following its premiere, Peacemaker Season 2 will adopt a weekly release schedule, with a new episode dropping every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. The eight-episode season will run through October 9, 2025. According to reports from sources like The Economic Times, the initial episode titles have been revealed, promising the same signature blend of action and dark humor:

- Episode 2: “A Man Is Only as Good as His Bird” – August 28, 2025
- Episode 3: “Another Rick up My Sleeve” – September 4, 2025

- Episode 5: “Back to the Suture” – September 18, 2025
A New Universe, A New Conflict
The second season picks up after the events of both Season 1 and the upcoming DCU film Superman (2025). While the first season was a spin-off from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Season 2 will officially be set in the new DC Universe (DCU), marking a soft reboot for the franchise. Creator James Gunn has confirmed that the season will address this continuity shift. While most events from the first season remain canon, certain elements, like the Justice League cameo, will be retconned.
The plot will see Chris Smith (John Cena) grappling with his newfound status as a hero while dealing with the fallout from Project Butterfly. A major new conflict arises with the introduction of Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo. As the father of Rick Flag Jr., whom Peacemaker killed in The Suicide Squad, he is seeking revenge and will serve as the season’s primary antagonist.
Returning Cast and New Additions
John Cena returns to lead the series as the jingoistic mercenary. He is joined by the returning 11th Street Kids, including Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Freddie Stroma as the scene-stealing Vigilante, and Steve Agee as John Economos. Robert Patrick is also set to reprise his role as Peacemaker’s deceased, racist father, Auggie Smith, likely in flashbacks or hallucinations.
The cast expands with several exciting new faces. In addition to Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., the season introduces Tim Meadows as A.R.G.U.S. agent Langston Fleury, Sol Rodríguez as Sasha Bordeaux, and frequent Gunn collaborator Michael Rooker as Red St. Wild, an eagle hunter on a mission to kill Eagly. The season will also feature crossover characters from Superman, including Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner.
Creative Team and Critical Acclaim
James Gunn remains the creative force behind the series, having written all eight episodes. Due to his commitments with Superman, he directed three episodes, including the premiere. The remaining episodes were directed by a talented team including Greg Mottola (Superbad), Peter Sollett, and Alethea Jones. Filming for the season officially wrapped in late November 2024.
Early critic reviews have been exceptionally strong. The season currently holds a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 41 reviews. Critics have praised it as being even better than the first, highlighting its blend of heart and humor. Amon Warmann of Empire Magazine noted that the season “raises its already high bar with a well-judged blend of heart, madness, and an ass-kicking eagle.” With such high praise, Peacemaker Season 2 is shaping up to be a must-watch event for DC fans.
