NYT Strands August 2: ‘Pretty as a Picture’ Puzzle Focuses on Digital Editing Tools

The New York Times Strands puzzle for August 2, 2025, challenged players with a modern, tech-savvy theme that has become a part of daily life for many. Under the clue “Pretty as a picture,” puzzle #517 required participants to identify words related to digital image manipulation, a task familiar to anyone who has used a smartphone camera or editing software.

The central theme was encapsulated by the spangram, which spanned the board horizontally. The solution to this crucial element was PHOTOEDITOR. This spangram set the stage for players to hunt down seven related theme words, all common functions within such applications. The answers for the day were: ADJUST, BLUR, CROP, ERASE, FILTER, MARKUP, and ROTATE.

While the official clue was evocative, various sources offered more direct hints to guide struggling players. CNET suggested players should think along the lines of, “Photoshop that image,” while Forbes offered the hint, “You can do it on your phone now,” highlighting the accessibility of these tools today. This specificity was key, as some players initially searched for broader photography terms like “LENSE” or “APERTURE” before realizing the puzzle’s focus was on the post-production process.

The gameplay experience for many involved an initial period of confusion followed by an “aha” moment. As noted by Tom’s Guide, finding a single theme word like BLUR was often enough to reveal the puzzle’s true nature, making the subsequent words easier to uncover. This puzzle underscored how Strands often plays with themes that are deeply embedded in contemporary culture.

How to Play Strands

For those new to the game, Strands is a word search with a twist. Presented with a 6×8 grid of letters, the objective is to find a set of theme-related words. Unlike a traditional word search, words are formed by connecting adjacent letters in any direction—up, down, left, right, and diagonally—with the path twisting and turning. All letters on the board are used in the final solution.

A key element is the “spangram,” a special word or phrase that describes the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. Finding the spangram, highlighted in yellow, can significantly help in solving the rest of the puzzle. The other theme words are highlighted in blue. If players get stuck, they can earn hints. Finding three non-theme words (each at least four letters long) will highlight the letters for one of the theme words, though it won’t reveal the word itself.

Today’s puzzle was a departure from the previous day’s nature-themed challenge, “Slithering away,” which featured the spangram SERPENT and answers like PYTHON and ANACONDA, as reported by Word Tips. This variety keeps the game fresh and engaging, testing players’ knowledge across a wide spectrum of topics.
