Nick Frost Transforms into Rubeus Hagrid for HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series, First Look Revealed

In a highly anticipated announcement that has sent ripples through the wizarding world, HBO has unveiled the first official image of acclaimed English actor, comedian, and screenwriter Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid for its upcoming Harry Potter television series. The reveal comes as production officially commences at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K., marking a significant step in bringing J.K. Rowling’s beloved saga to a new generation.

Frost, widely celebrated for his comedic timing and memorable roles, steps into the iconic shoes previously filled by the late Robbie Coltrane in the original film series. The new HBO adaptation aims to dedicate one season to each of Rowling’s seven books, promising an in-depth exploration of the magical universe. Filming for the first season began on Monday, July 14, 2025, and is slated to continue until spring 2026, with the series expected to premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.

The casting of Frost as the lovable half-giant groundskeeper of Hogwarts is part of a broader ensemble reveal. The central trio will be portrayed by newcomers Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, selected from over 30,000 auditions. The impressive cast also includes Emmy winner John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Oscar nominee Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. Other notable additions include Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, among many others. The series is helmed by showrunner and writer Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman serve as executive producers.

Born Nicholas John Frost on March 28, 1972, in Hornchurch, Greater London, the 53-year-old actor has built a distinguished career spanning over two decades. He rose to prominence through his frequent collaborations with close friend and fellow actor Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright. This creative trio is behind the critically acclaimed “Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy,” which includes the zombie-comedy Shaun of the Dead (2004), the action-comedy Hot Fuzz (2007), and the sci-fi comedy The World’s End (2013). Frost also starred as Mike Watt in the cult television comedy Spaced (1999–2001), a role partly inspired by his and Pegg’s real-life experiences as flatmates.

Beyond these iconic roles, Frost’s filmography showcases his versatility. He co-wrote and starred with Pegg in the alien road-trip comedy Paul (2011) and appeared in Joe Cornish’s sci-fi horror Attack the Block (2011). His diverse credits include roles in Kinky Boots (2005), The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn (2011), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), and the highly-rated wrestling drama Fighting with My Family (2019), which holds a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. On television, he has been seen in sketch shows like Man Stroke Woman, the sci-fi sitcom Hyperdrive, the martial arts series Into the Badlands (2017-2019), and co-created and starred in the paranormal comedy horror Truth Seekers (2020) with Pegg. He even made a memorable cameo as Santa Claus in Doctor Who (2014).

Frost’s upcoming projects further highlight his busy schedule. In addition to his role as Hagrid, he is set to voice Gobber the Belch in the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon (2025). His 2024 slate includes roles in films such as Timestalker, Get Away (which he also wrote), Black Cab (also a writer and executive producer), Krazy House, and Seize Them!. A patron of Humanists UK and a passionate supporter of West Ham United, Frost, who is a father of three children, released his memoir, Truths, Half Truths & Little White Lies, in 2015, offering insights into his life up to age 30. With a robust career and exciting new ventures, Nick Frost continues to be a prominent and beloved figure in the entertainment industry, promising fresh interpretations of cherished characters and original stories alike.
