Naval Academy Faces Threat Amid 9/11 Tributes

Security Lockdown Coincides with Solemn Remembrances

The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis experienced a tense day on Thursday, September 11, 2025, as the institution and the adjacent Naval Support Activity Annapolis were placed on lockdown following reports of an “active threat.” Officials urged all faculty, students, and staff to shelter in place as a precautionary measure while law enforcement investigated the situation. The lockdown cast a stark shadow over a day already marked by solemn reflection and remembrance.

Just one day prior, the academy community had come together to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In a poignant tribute organized by the Midshipmen Action Group, midshipmen, faculty, and visitors carefully placed 2,977 small American flags along the iconic Stribling Walk, one for each life lost. An additional 14 larger flags were planted to specifically remember the Naval Academy alumni who perished in the attacks. The academy also planned a 9/11 Remembrance Run for Thursday, a continuous relay with the U.S. flag scheduled to begin at 8:46 a.m., the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center, and conclude around 5:20 p.m., when 7 World Trade Center collapsed.

Midshipmen Athletes Press on Amidst Campus Events

Despite the week’s somber and serious events, the academy’s athletic programs continued to demonstrate resilience and focus. The nationally-ranked #17 Navy water polo team is set to begin a significant 10-game homestand by hosting the Navy Open from September 12-14. The Midshipmen (4-4) will play six games during the tournament, including a matchup against #10 Princeton. The team is led by standout junior Kiefer Black, who recently became the seventh player in program history to surpass 300 career points and is the all-time assists leader with 143.

Other teams are also kicking off their seasons or facing key matchups:

  • The men’s tennis team begins its fall season this weekend by hosting the Joe Hunt Invitational, an individual tournament featuring players from nine different schools.
  • The men’s soccer team suffered a narrow 1-0 road loss to George Washington on Wednesday, despite a career-high 10 saves from senior goalkeeper Robert Eaton.
  • The offshore sailing team celebrated a first-place finish in its division at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta in Chicago.

Future of the Academy: New Recruits and Policy Shifts

Looking toward the future, the academy continues to attract top-tier talent. Distance freestyle swimming specialist Will Charlton recently announced his commitment to join the Navy’s Class of 2030, beginning in the fall of 2026. His current best times are already strong enough to make an impact at the Patriot League conference level.

Internally, the institution is navigating potential policy changes. A draft memo from July 2025 indicated that Secretary of the Navy John Phelan is considering the formation of a new review board. The proposed board would be tasked with reviewing the academy’s curriculum and admissions processes to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and restore a “warrior ethos.” This proposal follows a recent leadership change that saw Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Michael J. Borgschulte become the first Marine to serve as the academy’s superintendent.

Legacy and Community Connections

The Naval Academy’s extensive legacy was also in the spotlight. The community mourned the recent passing of distinguished alumnus Captain Jim Lovell, a 1952 graduate who famously commanded the perilous Apollo 13 mission. Lovell died on August 7, 2025, at the age of 97. On a celebratory note, Cazenovia native and academy graduate Jonathan Townsend was recently promoted to the rank of rear admiral and named commander of Navy Region Northwest.

The academy’s reach extends throughout the sports world, as noted by digitaltrendstoday.com. Anna Gotterup, a member of the women’s lacrosse team, is the younger sister of Chris Gotterup, a rising star on the PGA Tour who recently won the Genesis Scottish Open.
