Suspect in Custody After Deadly Attack on Minnesota Lawmakers
MINNEAPOLIS – A 57-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a violent attack that left a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband dead and a state senator and his wife critically injured. Authorities revealed the suspect, Vance Boelter, possessed a “hit list” containing the names of 45 elected officials, all of whom are Democrats, raising grave concerns about targeted political violence.
Boelter was apprehended on Sunday evening, June 15, 2025, following what officials described as “the largest manhunt in state history.” He was found armed in a wooded area near Green Isle after a two-day search involving hundreds of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers. He now faces both state and federal charges, including murder and attempted murder.
A Chilling and Methodical Assault
The series of attacks began in the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025. According to law enforcement, Boelter impersonated a police officer, using a black SUV equipped with emergency lights and a fake “police” license plate. He wore a black tactical vest and a realistic silicone mask to disguise his identity.
The first attack occurred at the Champlin home of Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. Both were shot multiple times. In a statement, Yvette Hoffman revealed the severity of their injuries, stating her husband “took 9 bullet hits” and she “took 8,” adding they are “both incredibly lucky to be alive.” Both have undergone multiple surgeries and remain under observation.
About an hour and a half later, police performing a welfare check at the Brooklyn Park residence of Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman encountered the suspect. Boelter allegedly opened fire on the officers before retreating into the home and escaping out the back. Inside, authorities discovered the bodies of Rep. Hortman, the former speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and her husband, Mark.
Investigation Uncovers Disturbing Evidence
A search of the suspect’s vehicle and home uncovered what acting U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson called “voluminous writings,” suggesting the attacks had been planned for several months. The most alarming discovery was a list of 45 officials, which included the names of Hortman and Hoffman, as well as U.S. Senator Tina Smith and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Investigators believe Boelter intended to continue his attacks throughout the day. “His crimes are the stuff of nightmares,” Thompson stated in a press conference.
Investigators also found “No Kings” flyers in the suspect’s vehicle, a reference to anti-Trump protests that were scheduled for that Saturday. Out of an abundance of caution, state officials urged the public to avoid the demonstrations, as reported by digitaltrendstoday.com.
A Nation Grapples with Political Violence
The attacks in Minnesota have sent shockwaves across the nation, drawing swift condemnation from political leaders. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz described the shootings as a horrific “act of targeted political violence.”
In a statement, President Donald Trump condemned the violence, saying, “Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America.” Other prominent figures, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Rep. Gabby Giffords, who was herself a victim of a politically motivated shooting, also expressed their horror and called for an end to the rising climate of political violence.
This incident is the latest in a disturbing trend of attacks and threats against public officials. It highlights a period of intense political polarization that has seen a documented spike in threats against members of Congress and high-profile incidents such as the 2024 assassination attempt on President Trump. As the investigation into Boelter’s motives continues, the nation is once again forced to confront the dangerous consequences of political extremism.
