MLB Speedway Classic: Braves and Reds to Make History at Bristol Motor Speedway

Major League Baseball is gearing up for an unprecedented event, trading the traditional ballpark for the high banks of a NASCAR track. On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds will compete in the inaugural MLB Speedway Classic at the iconic Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, an event poised to shatter a 71-year-old attendance record.

This historic game, the first-ever professional baseball game held at a NASCAR track and the first regular-season MLB game in Tennessee, is expected to draw a crowd of over 85,000. According to CNBC, this will break the all-time single-game regular-season attendance record of 84,587, set in 1954. The venue, nicknamed “The Last Great Colosseum,” has a total capacity of approximately 146,000, making it one of the few places capable of hosting such a massive crowd for baseball.

The event is the culmination of a four-year planning process that began with a feasibility study in 2021. “It represents an opportunity for us to really focus in on having as many fans as possible at an event and to create a natural tie-in with another sport,” Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB’s senior vice president of global events, told CNBC. This initiative is part of MLB’s broader strategy to grow the game by creating unique experiences, similar to the successful Field of Dreams games in Iowa.

Transforming the 0.533-mile concrete oval into a major league-caliber baseball field was a monumental undertaking. As reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel, construction, which began in May 2025, involved significant demolition, including removing half of the Goodyear Building to accommodate the outfield and cutting out sections of the pit wall for left field. The project required 17,500 tons of gravel to level the infield, 340 tons of specialized clay, and 124,000 square feet of AstroTurf. The resulting field will measure 330 feet down the lines, 375 feet to the power alleys, and 400 feet to center field. Temporary clubhouses with full amenities have also been constructed for both teams.

The fan experience will extend well beyond the nine innings. The event, presented by BuildSubmarines.com, will feature a full-day festival. According to the official MLB schedule, a Fan Zone will open at noon with concerts, food trucks, and a Ferris wheel. The pre-game festivities will be headlined by a major concert inside the speedway featuring Tim McGraw, Pitbull, and Jake Owen. To further honor the occasion, baseball legends and Hall of Famers Chipper Jones (Braves) and Johnny Bench (Reds) will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Both teams will also don special NASCAR-inspired uniforms for the game.

The choice of the Braves and Reds was strategic, leveraging their regional fan bases and the star power of speedy players like Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. and Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz, which ties into the event’s racing theme. The historic game will be broadcast nationally on FOX, with coverage beginning at 6 p.m. ET, allowing fans across the country to witness this unique fusion of two of America’s most popular sports.
