Miss Mexico Crowned Amidst Pageant Turmoil

Miss Mexico Fátima Bosch Wins Miss Universe 2025 Amidst Tumultuous Competition

The 74th annual Miss Universe pageant, held in Bangkok, Thailand, culminated in a dramatic victory for Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, on November 21, 2025. Her crowning, however, followed a competition marked by significant controversies, including a public confrontation with a pageant official and allegations of pre-selection.

The Crowning Moment: A Triumph for Mexico

Fátima Bosch, a 25-year-old from Santiago de Teapa, Tabasco, Mexico, was crowned Miss Universe 2025 by the reigning Miss Universe 2024, Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark. This victory marks Mexico’s fourth Miss Universe title and is particularly significant as Bosch is the first woman from Tabasco to hold the national title and compete internationally. The competition saw 120 delegates from around the world vying for the prestigious crown.

The top five finalists who advanced to the final Q&A session were:

  • First Runner-up: Miss Thailand, Veena Praveenar Singh
  • Second Runner-up: Miss Venezuela, Stephany Abasali Nasser
  • Third Runner-up: Miss Philippines, Ahtisa Manalo
  • Fourth Runner-up: Miss Côte d’Ivoire, Olivia Yacé

A Pageant Plagued by Controversy

Bosch’s journey to the crown was anything but smooth, unfolding amidst a series of high-profile incidents that drew global attention and sparked widespread discussion.

Public Confrontation with Thai Director

Early in November, during a pre-pageant event, Miss Thailand director Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly berated Bosch. The exchange, captured on a livestream, showed Itsaragrisil criticizing Bosch for allegedly not participating in a sponsored photoshoot. He reportedly called her a “dumbhead” and, when Bosch attempted to defend herself, told her to be quiet before having security escort her out. Bosch bravely asserted, “I have a voice,” and stated, “You are not respecting me as a woman.” In a powerful show of solidarity, several other contestants walked out of the room. The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) President, Raul Rocha, condemned Itsaragrisil’s actions as “humiliation and abuse” and announced restrictions on his involvement in future events, though he was later seen at other pageant activities. Itsaragrisil subsequently issued an apology for the incident.

Allegations of Rigging and Judge Withdrawals

Days before the finals, the pageant faced further scrutiny when composer Omar Harfouch resigned as a judge. Harfouch alleged that the top 30 contestants had been pre-selected through a “secret vote” that did not involve the official judging panel. The MUO clarified that Harfouch had confused the main judging panel with a separate selection committee for the “Beyond the Crown Program,” which focuses on contestants’ charitable initiatives and does not influence the final competition results. Following Harfouch’s resignation, former French soccer player Claude Makélélé also withdrew as a judge, citing “unforeseen personal reasons.”

Meet the New Queen: Fátima Bosch’s Inspiring Journey

Beyond the controversies, Fátima Bosch emerged as a symbol of resilience and purpose. A graduate in Fashion & Apparel Design, with additional studies at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan and the Lyndon Institute in Vermont, Bosch has dedicated her career to sustainable fashion, transforming discarded materials into art. She also volunteers with children battling cancer and supports migrant and environmental causes through initiatives like Corazón Migrante and Ruta Monarca.

Bosch has openly shared her personal struggles with dyslexia, ADHD, and hyperactivity during her school years, turning these challenges into a platform for advocating for neurodiversity. During the final Q&A session, when asked about the challenges women face in 2025 and how she would use her platform, Bosch emphasized the importance of women using their voices to “speak up, to make change.” She added, “The brave ones that stand up are the ones that will make history.” To young girls, she advised, “Believe in the power of your authenticity. Believe in yourself. Your dreams matter, your heart matters, and never let anyone make you doubt your worth.”

Her victory is seen by many as a triumph of integrity and strength in a competition fraught with external pressures, setting a powerful tone for her reign as she steps into her role as an advocate for women and various social causes.
