Middle East Tensions: Trump Claims Ceasefire Between Israel and Iran Amid Ongoing Strikes

In a dramatic turn of events in the escalating Middle East conflict, US President Donald Trump announced on Monday evening, June 23, 2025, that Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire.” This declaration came hours after Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes on a US military base in Qatar and targets in Israel, following earlier US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. However, the situation remains fluid, with Iran offering a nuanced response and Israel continuing its military operations without official confirmation of the ceasefire.

President Trump took to social media to proclaim the ceasefire, stating it would be a phased process. According to his announcement, Iran would initiate a 12-hour ceasefire, followed by Israel for another 12 hours, culminating in an “Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR.” White House officials, speaking to CNN and NBC News, attributed the breakthrough to President Trump’s “strong leadership” and the recent US strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities. They also highlighted the crucial role of Qatar in mediating the talks, with the Qatari Prime Minister reportedly securing Iran’s agreement after President Trump spoke directly with the Emir of Qatar and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Despite Trump’s definitive announcement, Iran’s response has been less straightforward. Iranian state media confirmed a ceasefire deal, describing it as “imposed on the enemy” following Iran’s military response to “US aggression.” However, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi initially stated there was “NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations,” but added a significant caveat: Iran would halt its military response if Israel stopped its strikes by 4 AM Tehran time. Later, Araghchi suggested that military operations had indeed ceased at that time. Concurrently, Israel has not officially confirmed the ceasefire. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported identifying missiles launched from Iran early Tuesday morning, with one striking a residential building in the southern city of Beer Sheva, killing three people and injuring six others. The IDF also issued evacuation warnings for parts of Tehran, indicating continued Israeli operations in the Iranian capital, where Iranian state media reported fresh Israeli attacks overnight.

The immediate catalyst for the ceasefire talks was Iran’s retaliatory missile attack on the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday. This base, the largest US military facility in the Middle East, houses thousands of US troops and serves as the forward headquarters for US Central Command. US and Qatari officials confirmed that Iran provided advance notice of the strike, allowing for precautionary measures. Qatar’s air defenses successfully intercepted all but one of the approximately dozen short and medium-range ballistic missiles, resulting in no US casualties. President Trump characterized Iran’s strike as “very weak” and thanked Tehran for the early warning. Qatar, while condemning the attack as a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty, also criticized the US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, underscoring the complex diplomatic landscape.

The claimed ceasefire had an immediate impact on global markets, with oil prices tumbling as concerns over supply disruptions eased. US West Texas Intermediate crude slumped by 2% to $67.13 per barrel, and Brent crude was down 1.8% to $67.17 a barrel. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi stated that US strikes likely caused “very significant damage” to Iran’s Fordow uranium enrichment plant, though the full extent remains unclear. In Washington, reactions to Trump’s handling of the conflict were divided, with some House Democrats questioning the legality of the strikes without congressional approval, while Republicans largely defended the President’s actions.

As the region grapples with these developments, the durability of the proclaimed ceasefire remains uncertain. The conflicting statements from Tehran and the continued military actions on the ground highlight the fragile nature of the situation, leaving the international community to closely monitor whether this pause in hostilities will indeed lead to a lasting peace.
