Marlins Rally Late to Stun Phillies 6-5 in 11 Innings

A Stunning Turnaround in Philadelphia

The Miami Marlins orchestrated a dramatic late-game comeback to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 in a thrilling 11-inning contest on Tuesday night. Despite trailing for most of the game, the Marlins rallied with a series of clutch home runs and timely hits, keeping their slim playoff hopes alive while handing the Phillies their third consecutive loss.

Phillies Dominate Early

For the first seven innings, the game appeared to be firmly in Philadelphia’s control. The Phillies jumped out to an early lead in the first inning thanks to a solo home run from Kyle Schwarber. The blast marked a significant milestone for the slugger:

  • It was his National League-leading 54th home run of the season.
  • The homer brought in his 130th RBI, making him the first Phillie to reach that mark in a single season since Ryan Howard in 2009.

The Phillies extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning when Otto Kemp, filling in for an ill Bryce Harper, hit a two-run homer. On the mound, starter Cristopher Sánchez was masterful, pitching seven shutout innings. During his dominant performance, Sánchez also recorded his 200th strikeout of the season and the 500th of his career, seemingly paving the way for a straightforward victory.

Marlins Ignite Late-Game Rally

The momentum shifted dramatically in the eighth inning. Marlins outfielder Griffin Conine, in his return from the injured list, launched a solo home run off reliever David Robertson to put Miami on the board. Later in the inning, a single by Liam Hicks led to another run when Otto Lopez scored on a fielding error, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The true turning point came in the top of the ninth. Facing Phillies closer Jhoan Duran, Miami’s Heriberto Hernández hit a one-out, game-tying solo home run to send the contest into extra innings. “’OK, we tie this game, we’re going to win this game.’ That was my feeling,” Hernández said after the game, as cited by digitaltrendstoday.com.

Extra-Inning Fireworks

The back-and-forth action continued into the 10th inning. The Marlins plated two runs on an RBI single from Liam Hicks and an RBI forceout by Jakob Marsee to take a 5-3 lead. However, the Phillies refused to go quietly, tying the game in the bottom of the frame with clutch RBI singles from Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos.

In the 11th inning, the Marlins finally secured the winning run when Xavier Edwards hit a sacrifice fly, scoring the go-ahead run. Pitcher Josh Simpson (4-2) earned the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief, while Lou Trivino (3-2) was credited with the loss for Philadelphia.

Injuries and Playoff Picture

The intense game also saw key players from both teams exit with injuries. In the second inning, Marlins right fielder Dane Myers was carted off the field with a knee laceration after a hard collision with the outfield wall. In the ninth, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto left the game after taking a foul tip off his hand.

The victory was Miami’s seventh straight and their 11th in the last 12 games, keeping them four games behind the final National League wild-card spot with just five games remaining in the season. For the Phillies, the loss marks a frustrating stumble as they head toward the postseason.
