India’s Bold Moves: New Tariffs and Missile Tests

Economic Crosswinds from Washington

India, the world’s most populous nation and fifth-largest economy, is currently navigating significant economic challenges following the implementation of steep new tariffs by the United States. Effective August 27, 2025, the U.S. has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods. This measure includes an additional 25% penalty over what is reported as India’s continued purchases of Russian oil and weaponry, placing the country among those facing the highest U.S. tariffs globally. The move is expected to impact India’s vibrant export-driven industries, which supply a vast range of products from textiles to diamonds to American consumers.

In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has pivoted towards bolstering domestic economic resilience. Emphasizing a message of self-reliance, or “Swadeshi,” Modi has urged businesses to promote “Made in India” products. To mitigate the economic shock, the government is planning a significant fiscal stimulus. This includes a promised overhaul of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to a simplified two-tier system and an income tax giveaway announced earlier in the year, collectively aimed at putting more money into the hands of consumers and stimulating domestic demand. These measures are designed to support India’s large middle class and the millions of small businesses that form the backbone of its economy.

A Show of Strategic Strength

While facing economic pressure from a key trading partner, India continues to assert its strategic autonomy on the global stage. On August 20, 2025, the country successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM). The Ministry of Defence confirmed the launch was a routine user trial that validated all operational and technical parameters of the advanced weapon system.

The Agni-5, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is a cornerstone of India’s strategic deterrence policy. Key features of the missile include:

  • Range: A stated range of over 5,000 kilometers, capable of reaching deep into China and parts of Europe.
  • MIRV Technology: It is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, allowing a single missile to carry several nuclear warheads aimed at different targets.
  • Mobility: The missile is canister-launched from a road-mobile platform, ensuring high mobility and rapid deployment.

This test reinforces India’s “credible minimum deterrence” and its no-first-use nuclear policy. According to a report from digitaltrendstoday.com, the advancement has drawn international attention, with some regional observers expressing concern over its potential to impact regional stability.

Navigating Internal Complexities

Internally, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government continues to navigate a complex social and political landscape. While India is celebrated as the world’s largest democracy, human rights organizations have raised concerns about a growing crackdown on civil society, activists, and the media. Reports have highlighted the use of stringent laws to stifle dissent and increased pressure on non-governmental organizations through foreign funding regulations.

Furthermore, critics point to the adoption of laws and policies that are seen as discriminatory towards religious minorities, particularly Muslims, which they argue has emboldened nationalist groups. The government maintains its actions are necessary for national security and social harmony. These internal dynamics present an ongoing challenge as India seeks to balance its domestic agenda with its rising influence and responsibilities on the world stage. As the nation forges ahead, its ability to manage these external pressures and internal challenges will be critical in shaping its future trajectory.
