Houston Astros Power Past Chicago Cubs 7-1, Extend Winning Streak to Five

The Houston Astros continued their impressive run at home, defeating the Chicago Cubs 7-1 on Friday, June 27, 2025, at Daikin Park. The victory marks the Astros’ fifth consecutive win and solidifies their position atop the American League West standings. The Cubs, despite the loss, maintain their lead in the National League Central.

Houston’s offense exploded in the middle innings, highlighted by multi-run home runs. In the third inning, Yainer Diaz launched a three-run homer to left-center field, bringing home J. Meyers and C. Smith and giving the Astros an early 4-0 lead. The momentum continued into the fourth inning when C. Smith connected for another three-run blast to left-center, scoring J. Altuve and I. Paredes, extending Houston’s advantage to 7-0. Victor Caratini also contributed with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, scoring J. Altuve. The Astros finished the game with 9 hits.

The Cubs’ lone run came in the fifth inning courtesy of a solo home run by Nico Hoerner to left-center. Chicago managed only 5 hits throughout the contest.

On the mound, Astros left-hander Brandon Walter (1-1) delivered a strong performance, earning his first win of the season. Walter pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just 1 earned run on 4 hits, with no walks and 5 strikeouts. His outing effectively stifled the Cubs’ lineup. For the Cubs, rookie right-hander Cade Horton (3-2) struggled, taking the loss after surrendering 7 earned runs on 8 hits over 4.0 innings, walking 4 and striking out 2. Chris Flexen provided 2.0 innings of scoreless relief for Chicago, allowing only one hit.

Both teams entered the series with identical 48-33 records, tied for the third-best in MLB behind the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Astros’ win improves their record to 49-33, while the Cubs fall to 48-34. Houston’s dominance at home continues, as they now boast an impressive 31-13 record at Daikin Park this season. Prior to this game, the Astros had swept the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game series, outscoring them 5-1, showcasing their strong pitching. Cubs manager Craig Counsell recently praised pitcher Shota Imanaga for his control and execution in his return from injury, a performance that helped Chicago split their four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The series between these two division leaders continues, promising more competitive baseball as both teams vie for postseason positioning. The Astros’ recent surge, particularly their pitching and timely hitting, makes them a formidable opponent, especially on their home turf.
