First Look Revealed for HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series as Production Commences

The highly anticipated television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved ‘Harry Potter’ series has officially begun production, with HBO offering fans a tantalizing first glimpse of its new Boy Who Lived. The studio announced on Monday, July 14, 2025, that filming is underway, accompanied by an initial image of Dominic McLaughlin in his full Hogwarts uniform, complete with the iconic round glasses and lightning-shaped scar. This reveal marks a significant milestone for the series, which is set to premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.

Dominic McLaughlin, the young Scottish actor cast as Harry Potter, is seen in a set photo donning attire reminiscent of the original film series’ uniforms. At just 11 years old, McLaughlin matches the age of Daniel Radcliffe when he first took on the role in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,’ creating a full-circle moment for the franchise. McLaughlin’s journey to becoming Harry involved an extensive global casting call that reportedly received over 30,000 audition tapes. He has been training at the Performance Academy Scotland for five years and has prior acting credits, including the upcoming BBC action-adventure series ‘Gifted’ and the Sky comedy ‘Grow.’ Notably, he has already shared the stage with Ralph Fiennes (the original Voldemort) in a production of ‘Macbeth’ and will star alongside Nick Frost (the new Hagrid) in ‘Grow,’ adding intriguing connections to the Wizarding World lore. As of now, McLaughlin does not maintain a public presence on social media platforms like Instagram or X (formerly Twitter).

Alongside McLaughlin, the new ‘Golden Trio’ will feature Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The casting process, led by directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, was described by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer Mark Mylod as an “extraordinary search.”

Further casting announcements have expanded the ensemble, revealing a mix of seasoned actors and new talent. The roles of key Hogwarts figures have been filled by acclaimed performers: John Lithgow is set to portray Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will take on Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is cast as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost will embody Rubeus Hagrid. New additions to the cast include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander. Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse will also appear in recurring roles as Quirinus Quirrell and Argus Filch, respectively. While specific actors for Draco and Lucius Malfoy were not named in the recent announcements, HBO previously revealed their casting last month.

The television series aims to be a “faithful” adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original novels, with each season dedicated to one book, promising to bring the magical saga to both new and existing audiences. J.K. Rowling herself will serve as an executive producer on the show, ensuring a close connection to the source material. This commitment to a long-form, book-by-book adaptation distinguishes it from the original film series, allowing for a more comprehensive exploration of the intricate plotlines and character developments.

The announcement comes nearly 14 years after ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’ concluded the highly successful film franchise. While excitement among fans is palpable, the series faces the challenge of living up to the immense legacy of the films and navigating ongoing discussions surrounding the author. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has expressed strong enthusiasm for leveraging the studio’s major intellectual properties, with ‘Harry Potter’ being a cornerstone of this strategy. The ambitious 10-year commitment to the series underscores the studio’s belief in its potential, despite market dynamics and the high bar set by its cinematic predecessors. Fans eagerly await more details as production continues on this highly anticipated return to the Wizarding World.
