Fatal Shooting on Route 302 in Windham Prompts Manhunt and Shelter-in-Place Order

WINDHAM, Maine – A fatal shooting on a busy roadway in North Windham on Friday, August 15, 2025, triggered a large-scale police response, a shelter-in-place order for residents, and an active search for a suspect who fled the scene. The incident has left the community on high alert as law enforcement agencies work to locate the individual involved.

The event unfolded Friday afternoon on Route 302, prompting the Windham Police Department and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office to close a portion of the road at Landing Road. According to a report from NEWS CENTER Maine, the road was expected to remain closed for an extended period as the investigation commenced. While police have not officially confirmed the number of victims or the fatality, a photographer from the news outlet reported seeing a tarp in the middle of the road covering what appeared to be a body.

In response to the active threat, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order around 4 p.m. for residents along the Windham and Raymond town line. The Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) sent a message to phones in the area, which read: “Gunman at large in North Windham. Shelter indoors, lock doors. Report suspicious behavior to 911. Last seen Windham/Raymond line. Stay inside. Tune to local news or Windham PD for updates.”

The specific area covered by the shelter-in-place order includes Route 302 from Route 85 in Raymond to White Bridge Road in Windham, as well as surrounding side streets. Residents were urged to remain indoors and exercise extreme caution.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are collaborating on the investigation and the search for the suspect. The Maine State Police joined the Windham Police Department and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office in the response, as confirmed by the Department of Public Safety around 3:30 p.m. Friday. Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce told NEWS CENTER Maine that his deputies were actively searching in the Raymond area for a vehicle that reportedly left the scene after the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released a description of the suspect or the vehicle they are searching for. The motive for the shooting remains unknown at this time. The Maine State Police are asking for the public’s assistance and have requested that anyone with information regarding the incident contact them at 207-624-7076.

As the situation develops, law enforcement officials continue to process the scene on Route 302 and expand their search for the person responsible. Local officials are advising the public to stay informed through official channels and local news outlets for the latest updates on the shelter-in-place order and the ongoing investigation.
