Dallas Stars Trade Matt Dumba to Pittsburgh Penguins in Defensive Shake-Up

The NHL trade market saw a notable move on Thursday, July 10, 2025, as the Dallas Stars announced they have traded veteran defenseman Matt Dumba to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In exchange, the Stars acquired defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok and sent a 2028 second-round draft pick to Pittsburgh, as reported by McAlester News.

Dumba’s tenure with the Dallas Stars was brief and, arguably, less impactful than anticipated. He joined the Stars last year, signing a two-year contract worth $7.5 million as a free agent. Despite the significant investment, the 30-year-old blueliner struggled to find his footing within the team’s system. During the 2024-25 regular season, Dumba recorded just one goal and nine assists for a total of 10 points in 63 games. His limited role became particularly evident during the playoffs, where he was a healthy scratch for all 18 games as the Stars made a deep run to the Western Conference Final for the third consecutive year, ultimately falling short. This trade allows Dallas to move on from a contract that wasn’t yielding the desired on-ice results.

A seasoned NHL veteran, Dumba was originally selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, where he spent his first ten seasons. Known for his physical play and offensive upside earlier in his career, he has accumulated 258 points (84 goals, 174 assists) in 737 career NHL games. Beyond the ice, Dumba has been recognized for his community involvement, notably winning the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2020 for his leadership and humanitarian contributions, as detailed on his Wikipedia page. Prior to joining the Stars, Dumba also had stints with the Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2023-24 season.

Coming to Dallas in the trade is Vladislav Kolyachonok, a 22-year-old defenseman who split last season between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Utah Hockey Club (formerly Arizona Coyotes). Kolyachonok registered seven points, including two goals, in 35 games during the 2024-25 season. His NHL career began in the 2021-22 season with the Arizona franchise, and he has since played 68 career games, tallying 14 points (four goals). For the Stars, acquiring Kolyachonok, a younger defenseman, along with shedding Dumba’s contract, provides flexibility and a different defensive profile.

This transaction appears to be a strategic move for both franchises. For the Stars, it’s an opportunity to reconfigure their defensive corps, moving an underperforming asset and gaining a younger player with potential, while also freeing up cap space in the long term by sending a draft pick. For the Penguins, adding a veteran presence like Dumba, despite his recent struggles, could offer depth and experience to their blue line, especially if he can rediscover some of his earlier career form. The inclusion of a 2028 second-round pick further sweetens the deal for Pittsburgh, providing future assets.

The trade signals a shift in defensive strategies for both Dallas and Pittsburgh as they look ahead to future seasons.
