Cruz Azul vs. Toluca Liga MX Showdown Delayed by Severe Electrical Storm

The highly anticipated Jornada 6 match of the Liga MX Apertura 2025 between Cruz Azul and Toluca FC has been delayed due to severe weather conditions in Mexico City. Originally scheduled for a 21:05 (9:05 PM) local time kickoff on Saturday, August 23, the start was postponed after a powerful electrical storm descended upon the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

The Liga MX officially announced the delay through its social media channels, stating, “The match @CruzAzul vs @TolucaFC at the Olímpico Universitario will delay its start… This is due to the electrical storm in the vicinity of the stadium. In coordination with Civil Protection, the new start time will be determined and announced.” As reported by ESPN Deportes, the storm brought intense rain, strong winds, and thunder to the southern part of the city, causing localized flooding around the stadium and turning some stairways into cascades, which complicated access for fans arriving at the venue.

The delay puts a temporary halt on what promises to be a pivotal clash for the top of the league table. Cruz Azul, managed by Nicolás Larcamón, entered the weekend in excellent domestic form. La Máquina is currently on a five-match unbeaten streak in the league (three wins, two draws) and sits in third place with 11 points. A victory would have given them a chance to claim the top spot in the standings. Their most recent league outing was a thrilling 3-2 victory over Santos Laguna. However, their form in the recent Leagues Cup was a different story, marked by a stunning 7-0 defeat to the Seattle Sounders, a result they are keen to put behind them.

On the other side, Toluca FC, led by coach Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed, came into the match just one point behind their opponents, occupying fifth place with 10 points. Los Diablos Rojos are also looking to bounce back and focus on their league campaign after being eliminated from the Leagues Cup. According to Mediotiempo, their tournament run ended in the Quarter-Finals after a penalty shootout loss to Orlando City. A win on the road against a direct rival like Cruz Azul would be a significant boost for their title aspirations.

Historically, the matchup between these two clubs has been tightly contested. Over their last 59 encounters, Cruz Azul holds a slight edge with 23 wins to Toluca’s 17, with 19 matches ending in a draw, per data from AiScore. The recent history is even closer, with Toluca winning two of the last six meetings, Cruz Azul winning one, and three ending level.

Prior to the weather delay, both teams had announced their potential starting lineups. Cruz Azul was expected to field a team featuring Mier; Ditta, Lira, Piovi, Rivero; Faravelli, Rodríguez, Rotondi; Romero, Sepúlveda, and Morales. Toluca’s probable eleven included García; López, Luan, Pereira, Gallardo; Ruiz, Romero; Angulo, Vega, Helinho, and Paulinho.

Fans waiting for the top-tier clash will have to remain patient as officials assess the safety of the conditions. The match is scheduled to be broadcast on Canal 5 and TUDN in Mexico, with streaming available on VIX Premium. Both teams and their supporters are now awaiting the final decision from the league on a rescheduled kickoff time for this crucial Apertura 2025 fixture.
