ChatGPT Experiences Partial Outage Affecting Search a Day After GPT-5 Launch

On the morning of August 8, 2025, millions of ChatGPT users encountered service disruptions, primarily affecting the platform’s integrated search functionality. The partial outage occurred just one day after OpenAI announced the launch of its highly anticipated next-generation model, GPT-5, leading to widespread concern and a flurry of activity on social media and service monitoring websites.

According to OpenAI’s official status page, the company began investigating a failure related to its search feature at 4:42 a.m. Pacific Time. The issue directly impacted users who rely on the tool for real-time information and web-browsing integrations. By 6:11 a.m., the company posted an update stating, “We have identified the cause and are working on mitigating it.” The incident persisted for several hours, with a final update at 11:54 a.m. confirming, “We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery.”

The disruption did not go unnoticed by the global user base. The monitoring platform Downdetector recorded a sharp spike in user-submitted problem reports around 11:00 a.m. PT. An analysis of these reports showed that 48% were related to issues with ChatGPT, 30% concerned the application in general, and 22% pointed to problems with the website. The public interest was further highlighted by Google Trends data, which, according to a report by Merca2.0, showed that search queries like “is ChatGPT down?” and “why is chatgpt not working” surged by as much as 4,450%.

The timing of the outage was particularly notable, coming on the heels of the August 7 launch of GPT-5. OpenAI has touted GPT-5 as its “smartest, fastest, most useful model yet,” with state-of-the-art performance across a range of capabilities, including coding, mathematics, and creative writing. The proximity of the service failure to this major product release fueled speculation and heightened user attention. While OpenAI’s official statements specified that the issue was a partial downtime of the search feature for ChatGPT users, it was not immediately clear whether the newly launched GPT-5 or other API models were impacted by the instability.

As of the afternoon of August 8, OpenAI’s system status had been updated to “monitoring,” indicating that while the primary issue had been addressed, the service was still under observation to ensure a full recovery. The company’s status page noted that ChatGPT had experienced a 99.48% uptime over the preceding 90 days, but this incident serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in maintaining large-scale AI services that are relied upon by a vast and growing number of users worldwide. While the main website, chatgpt.com, remained largely accessible, the degradation of a core feature was significant enough to disrupt workflows for many individuals and businesses. The incident underscores the increasing dependence on AI platforms and the critical importance of their stability, especially as more powerful and integrated models like GPT-5 become central to daily operations.
