California on High Alert as Tsunami Warning Issued for North Coast Following 8.8 Quake

A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, has triggered tsunami alerts along the entire U.S. West Coast, placing California on high alert. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System has issued its highest-level alert, a Tsunami Warning, for the coastal areas of Del Norte and Humboldt counties, while a Tsunami Advisory remains in effect for the rest of the California coast, from the Mendocino County line to the Mexican border.

The significant seismic event occurred at approximately 4:25 p.m. PDT. The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported the magnitude as 8.7 before upgrading it to 8.8. The quake generated a tsunami that prompted the National Tsunami Warning Center to issue a series of escalating alerts for California, beginning with a watch and later upgrading it based on new data.

Tsunami Warning for Far Northern California

The most severe threat is concentrated on the state’s far North Coast. A Tsunami Warning means a tsunami with the potential for significant inundation is imminent or expected. Residents in coastal areas from the Oregon-California border south to Cape Mendocino are urged to move inland to higher ground. This includes the communities of Crescent City, Eureka, Arcata, and Trinidad.

Crescent City, a historical tsunami hot spot, is expected to see the most significant impact, with forecasted waves between 3 and 5.7 feet. The tsunami’s effects in this area could last for as long as 36 hours. The first waves were expected to reach Crescent City around 11:55 p.m. Tuesday. Humboldt County is predicted to experience smaller waves of 1 to 2 feet. The area’s history, including devastating tsunamis in 1964 and 2011, underscores the seriousness of the current warning.

Advisory for Central and Southern Coasts

For the remainder of the California coast, a Tsunami Advisory is in effect. According to the National Weather Service, an advisory means a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or dangerous waves is expected, and the public should stay off beaches and out of harbors and marinas. Widespread flooding is not anticipated in these areas.

Predicted arrival times and wave heights vary down the coast:

  • Fort Bragg: Arrival around 11:50 p.m. with waves up to 1.5 feet.
  • San Francisco: Arrival around 12:40 a.m. with waves less than 1 foot.
  • Port San Luis: Arrival around 12:35 a.m. with waves of 2 to 3.8 feet.
  • Los Angeles Harbor: Arrival around 1:05 a.m. with waves less than 1 foot.
  • Newport Beach and La Jolla: Arrival around 1:10 a.m. with waves less than 1 foot.

Officials warn that the first wave is often not the largest, and the danger can persist for many hours. Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones noted that the phenomenon is less of a crashing wave and more of a rapid rise in sea level, which can create powerful and destructive currents.

Official Guidance and Safety Measures

Local authorities across the state are urging caution. While no mandatory evacuations have been ordered for areas under the advisory, law enforcement and emergency services are asking everyone to stay away from the coastline. The Fort Bragg Police Department has asked those in low-lying areas to monitor news for any changes. Cal Fire has placed its technical rescue team on standby.

The Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group described the event as “not our worst case tsunami” but emphasized the danger in bays, harbors, and on beaches. Officials stress that the public should not go to the coast to watch the event. “It will be dark and there won’t be anything to see,” the group stated in a release. The safest way to observe the tsunami is online through tide gauges provided by NOAA. Residents are advised to follow all instructions from local emergency officials and monitor official sources for updates.
