Bryce James Forges His Own Path at Arizona, Armed with Advice from a King

The James basketball dynasty is expanding its collegiate footprint. Bryce Maximus James, the youngest son of NBA icon LeBron James, is set to begin his freshman season with the University of Arizona Wildcats, bringing a celebrated name and a promising skill set to one of college basketball’s premier programs. While his older brother, Bronny, recently completed his rookie season with the Los Angeles Lakers, Bryce is now carving out his own identity in the competitive landscape of the Big 12 Conference.

Standing at 6-foot-6, Bryce James is a shooting guard who has navigated a winding high school path. He began at the prestigious Sierra Canyon School alongside his brother before brief stints at Campbell Hall and Notre Dame High School, ultimately returning to Sierra Canyon to finish his senior year. Rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and a four-star recruit by others, he garnered offers from programs like Duquesne and Ohio State before committing to Arizona on January 1, 2025, and officially signing his letter of intent on April 17.

His decision was met with enthusiasm from his father. “It was his decision to make,” LeBron James said after the announcement. “He went where he felt comfortable. Coach [Tommy] Lloyd, straight shooter, gave him exactly what they believe in him or what they thought about him as a player and as a person. We’re happy to be part of the Bear Down community now.”

Bryce himself cited the campus atmosphere as a key factor. “For me personally [it was about] the environment. I know the fans really enjoy coming to the Arizona game and they like to get rowdy and loud,” Bryce said in his first media availability. “So, for me personally, I just want a real college experience and for me, Arizona was one of those colleges.”

He joins a formidable Arizona team that boasts the No. 3 recruiting class in the nation, featuring five-star talents like guard Brayden Burries and forward Koa Peat. With a crowded and experienced backcourt that includes returning starters Jaden Bradley and Anthony Dell’Orso, playing time may be a challenge for the freshman. However, both Bryce and his coach, Tommy Lloyd, are focused on long-term development.

“We treat Bryce just like we treat every other guy,” Coach Lloyd stated earlier this summer. “He shows up every day with a smile on his face… My hope for him is everybody gives him space and let’s him develop into his own version of Bryce James.”

Bryce echoed this sentiment, noting Lloyd’s reputation for player development was a major draw. “He is all about development. So, just getting better in practice every single day, getting stronger in the weight room. So, for me, that’s what I’m looking forward to,” he said.

Carrying the James name comes with immense pressure, but Bryce is armed with invaluable advice from his father and brother. He revealed the guidance LeBron gave him: “Just working hard and coming in and doing what you do best. Making sure if you’re not having some good days, always have to stay positive… miss a shot, maybe get a turnover or something, don’t hang your head down. Always keep your head up.” His brother Bronny’s advice was to “stay consistent, stay locked in.”

Scouts praise Bryce for his solid fundamentals and shooting prowess. 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein described him as a “fundamentally sound player with solid perimeter size and a good early skill-set,” highlighting his “clear shooting potential with naturally soft touch.”

While speculation about a future in the NBA is inevitable, Bryce’s immediate focus is on adjusting to college life and contributing to the Wildcats. He is not currently projected as a one-and-done prospect, but as he develops under Coach Lloyd’s tutelage, his trajectory will be one of the most closely watched stories in college basketball. For now, Bryce James is focused on being a Wildcat, ready to write his own chapter in his family’s storied legacy.
