Brazilian Icon Preta Gil Dies at 50, Leaving a Legacy of Music and Activism

Brazilian singer, actress, and activist Preta Gil, a vibrant and influential figure in her nation’s cultural landscape, has passed away at the age of 50. The daughter of legendary musician and former Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil, she died on Sunday, July 20, 2025, in the United States, following complications during her ongoing treatment for bowel cancer. Her death marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to art and advocacy, leaving behind a profound legacy in Brazilian music and social justice.

Preta Gil’s health journey had been closely followed by her fans and the public, as she openly shared her battle with cancer. She was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2023 and, after a period of intense treatment, achieved remission later that same year. However, the disease tragically returned in August 2024, spreading to four areas of her body, including two lymph nodes, a metastasis in the peritoneum, and a nodule in the ureter, as reported by Hindustan Times. Her passing occurred during her ongoing treatment in the US, a testament to her resilience in the face of a challenging illness.

Born Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira on August 8, 1974, in Rio de Janeiro, Preta Gil was immersed in a rich artistic environment from birth. As the fourth of Gilberto Gil’s eight children and the goddaughter of Brazilian music icon Gal Costa, she grew up playing with the children of other music legends, including those of Caetano Veloso, whom she affectionately called “uncle.” Despite initial hesitations about following in her famous family’s footsteps, even launching a successful marketing company first, she eventually embraced her artistic calling. She launched her singing career at 28, reportedly inspired by recurring dreams of her late brother, Pedro, who died in a 1990 car accident.

Her debut album, Prêt-à-Porter, released in 2003, immediately garnered attention, partly due to its bold nude cover, which Gil intended as a statement of rebirth and self-acceptance. This was followed by successful albums such as Preta (2005), Sou Como Sou (2012), and Todas as Cores (2017). Beyond music, Gil was a versatile entertainer, appearing in popular soap operas like Caminhos do Coração (2007), Os Mutantes (2008), and Ó Pai Ó (2008), and as herself in Cheias de Charme (2012) and Pé na Cova (2013). She also ventured into entrepreneurship, co-founding Mynd, an influencer marketing agency, according to Times Now News. A significant highlight of her career was the creation of “Bloco da Preta” in 2010, a Carnival group that quickly became one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest and most beloved street festivities, drawing millions of participants and embodying her vibrant spirit.

Preta Gil was as renowned for her activism as for her artistry. She was a fierce advocate for social justice, consistently using her prominent platform to champion the rights of marginalized communities. She tirelessly spoke out against racism, fought for women’s rights, and was a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. In July 2020, she publicly identified as pansexual, later clarifying her identity as bisexual since birth, and proudly embraced her identity as a “fat black bi woman,” as noted by Wikipedia. Her commitment to self-acceptance, body positivity, and love resonated deeply with her audience, making her a powerful symbol of inclusivity and challenging societal stigmas. Her “Drao” tattoo, a tribute to her mother’s nickname and a favorite song by her father, symbolized her deep connection to her roots and personal identity.

Preta Gil leaves behind her 28-year-old son, Francisco, and her 7-year-old granddaughter, Sol de Maria. Her impact extends far beyond her immediate family and discography; Preta Gil’s unwavering spirit, her dedication to challenging societal norms, and her vibrant contributions to Brazilian culture will be remembered as a testament to a life lived with passion and purpose. Her passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of her fans and in the broader cultural landscape of Brazil, but her legacy as an artist and an activist will continue to inspire.
