Boston Celtics Select Hugo Gonzalez with 28th Pick in 2025 NBA Draft, Eyeing Future Flexibility

The Boston Celtics made their first selection in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday, choosing Spanish forward Hugo Gonzalez with the 28th overall pick. The decision to keep their own first-round pick comes amidst a period of significant roster adjustments for the Celtics, including recent trades involving Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, and ongoing discussions surrounding key players like Jaylen Brown and Derrick White.

Gonzalez, a 19-year-old talent from Real Madrid, has been a prominent figure in European youth basketball. Born in Madrid on February 5, 2006, he comes from a family with a strong basketball lineage, as both his parents, Paco Gonzalez and Montserrat Pena, were professional players in Spain. He joined Real Madrid’s youth system at age nine, quickly ascending through the ranks to play for their junior, reserve (Liga EBA), and eventually the senior team. In the 2024-25 season with Real Madrid in the Liga ACB, Gonzalez averaged 5.2 points and 2.5 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game over 29 appearances (Basketball-Reference.com, CelticsBlog). He also made his debut with the Spain senior national team in February 2025, scoring 11 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in a EuroBasket qualifier against Latvia (NBA.com).

Scouts highlight Gonzalez’s impressive motor and defensive effort. J. Kyle Mann of The Ringer’s 2025 NBA Draft Guide noted his “terrific motor” and “effort on defense rarely wanes,” along with a “smooth” live dribble. NBA.com’s analysis describes him as an “athletic, big guard who thrives in pick-and-roll settings,” capable of patiently navigating into the paint. While he shows promise as a primary offensive initiator who puts pressure on the rim and finds open teammates, areas for improvement include finishing around the rim, reducing careless passes, and developing his outside shooting (NBA.com, NBC Sports Boston). Real Madrid coach Chus Mateo, in October 2024, expressed strong confidence in Gonzalez’s potential, stating, “He has the potential to be great, and I’m certain of it. … His time will come, and when it does, he will shine” (NBA.com). ESPN’s Jonathan Givony even labeled the pick “one of the biggest steals” of the draft (NBC Sports Boston).

Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens spoke highly of Gonzalez, emphasizing his maturity and competitive spirit. “He’s a young guy, but a little bit of an old soul. He’s played on a team with adults for a long time,” Stevens said, adding, “He’s tough, he’s hard-playing, he cuts, he goes after the ball, he competes. He’s got all the intangibles of a winning basketball player” (CelticsBlog). Stevens also shed light on the Celtics’ broader offseason strategy, stating, “There’s clearly a need to prioritize regaining our flexibility, maximizing from an asset standpoint what we can… We knew this was coming. This isn’t a huge surprise. We have to make sure we prioritize that flexibility.”

The Celtics plan to bring Gonzalez over to the NBA for the upcoming 2025-26 season (CelticsBlog). While immediate significant playing time might be limited, the absence of Jayson Tatum for most, if not all, of the season due to injury could open up opportunities for Gonzalez to get early minutes, especially if he impresses in the Summer League, Preseason, or with the Maine Celtics in the G League. This mirrors the path taken by last year’s first-round pick, Baylor Scheierman, who saw increased playing time in Boston later in his rookie season after spending time in the G League (CelticsBlog, Bleacher Report).

The Celtics are not done with the 2025 NBA Draft, as they hold the 32nd overall pick, the second selection in the second round. This pick was acquired in a 2023 trade that sent the 25th overall pick (Marcus Sasser) to the Pistons in exchange for the 31st pick, the most favorable of the Pistons, Warriors, and Wizards’ 2025 second-round picks, and the most favorable of the Timberwolves, Pelicans, Knicks, and Trail Blazers’ 2026 second-round picks (CelticsBlog). Day 2 of the draft is scheduled for Thursday, June 26th, at 8 PM ET on ESPN.

With the selection of Hugo Gonzalez, the Celtics appear to be investing in a high-potential, competitive wing who aligns with Brad Stevens’ vision for the team’s future flexibility and asset maximization. Fans will be eager to see how this young Spanish talent develops within the Celtics organization.
