Bills Rookie Cornerback Maxwell Hairston Suffers Non-Contact Knee Injury at Training Camp

A wave of concern washed over the Buffalo Bills training camp on Tuesday after first-round draft pick Maxwell Hairston suffered a non-contact injury to his right knee. The incident occurred during the sixth day of camp at St. John Fisher University, casting a shadow over the team’s first week of padded practices.

During positional drills, the rookie cornerback from Kentucky went down in what teammate Dane Jackson described as a “freak trip up,” according to a report from CBS Sports. Hairston was visibly in pain, pointing to the exterior of his right knee before being attended to by Buffalo’s head athletic trainer, Nate Breske. After an initial examination on the field, Hairston was helped to the medical tent and did not return to practice. The team has not yet released an official diagnosis, but he is undergoing further tests to determine the severity of the injury.

The emotional impact on his teammates was immediate and palpable. “We said a prayer for him and we (tried to) uplift him,” Jackson said after practice. “Hope to see him when we get in here and find out everything that’s going on with him and (hope for) a speedy recovery for him too. He’s been doing a great job at camp as well.”

Fellow cornerback Christian Benford expressed his distress over the injury. “I was salty, I was upset,” Benford said, as reported by NBC Sports. “That’s somebody who’s a pure-hearted kid. That’s someone you work with off the field so much and you put so much time in with them and then they fall like that… I’m sick about that.”

A significant injury to Hairston would be a major blow to a Bills defense already managing a growing list of injuries. The team held out 11 players from Monday’s session, and Hairston’s potential absence would further test the depth of their secondary. The Bills selected Hairston with the 30th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, banking on his elite speed and playmaking ability. He recorded an official 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and was a standout at Kentucky, where he tallied six interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns, over his final two seasons.

Hairston was in a competitive battle for a starting cornerback position, vying for a spot alongside Benford and veteran Tre’Davious White. In Hairston’s absence on Tuesday, White was reportedly dominant, making several key plays. The day also saw other notable performances, with edge rusher Joey Bosa showing flashes of his pass-rushing prowess and tight end Dalton Kincaid returning to practice after sitting out Monday, though he reportedly struggled.

The injury occurred as the team transitioned to more intense, padded practices. Head coach Sean McDermott had set a clear tone for the sessions, stating he wanted to see “nasty, physical football,” but emphasized the importance of playing clean. “That nastiness has to be developed here, but it can’t be at the expense of someone’s career,” McDermott said, according to Buffalo Rumblings.

As the Bills and their fans await an official update, the team faces uncertainty surrounding a key piece of their defensive future. The hope is for a swift recovery for the promising rookie, whose development is considered crucial for the team’s aspirations this season.
