Armando González’s Late Double Secures Thrilling 4-3 Comeback Win for Chivas Over Atlético San Luis

In a dramatic rollercoaster of a match at Estadio Akron, Chivas de Guadalajara secured their first victory of the Apertura 2025 Liga MX season, overcoming a spirited Atlético San Luis side with a thrilling 4-3 comeback on Saturday, July 26, 2025. Substitute Armando González emerged as the hero, netting two late goals to snatch three crucial points for the home side. VAVEL and ESPN reported on the intense encounter.

The match, part of Jornada 3, saw Chivas, under coach Gabriel Milito, eager to register their first points after a season-opening loss to León. Atlético San Luis, led by Guillermo Abascal, came into the game with three points from their first two outings. The stage was set for a captivating contest, and it certainly delivered.

Chivas started strong, taking an early lead in the 11th minute when a header from Richard Ledezma led to an unfortunate own goal by San Luis captain Juan Manuel Sanabria. The home side doubled their advantage just before halftime, with Cade Cowell heading home in the 45th minute +1, following a corner kick sequence. Chivas went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead, seemingly in control of the game. Mediotiempo highlighted Chivas’s strong first-half performance.

However, the second half saw a remarkable turnaround from Atlético San Luis. Just five minutes after the restart, Eduardo Águila pulled one back for the visitors with a header from a corner in the 50th minute, injecting new life into the match. The momentum continued to shift when, after a VAR review, San Luis was awarded a penalty. João Pedro Galvão calmly converted from the spot in the 69th minute, leveling the score at 2-2 and stunning the home crowd. The comeback was completed in the 75th minute when Benjamín Galdames scored with a header, putting San Luis ahead 3-2 and leaving Chivas facing a potential second consecutive defeat.

With time winding down and Chivas trailing, coach Milito made crucial substitutions, bringing on Armando González. The young forward, nicknamed ‘La Hormiga’ (The Ant), proved to be the game-changer. In the 84th minute, González found the equalizer, reacting quickly to a save by Andrés Sánchez to make it 3-3. The drama wasn’t over yet. In the 90th minute, González struck again, converting a pass from Efraín Álvarez to complete his brace and seal an improbable 4-3 victory for Chivas, sending the Estadio Akron faithful into raptures. His performance earned him the MVP title, as noted by VAVEL.

This hard-fought win marks a significant moment for Chivas, providing them with their first points of the Apertura 2025 season and a much-needed morale boost ahead of the upcoming Leagues Cup. The match also took place amidst ongoing discussions surrounding Chivas striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, who was not included in the squad due to recent controversies regarding alleged sexist remarks, leading to disciplinary actions from the Liga MX, FMF, and Chivas, as well as a contract rescission by Puma. His absence from the Leagues Cup squad has also been confirmed. Despite this off-field distraction, the team delivered a memorable performance.

Both teams will now turn their attention to the Leagues Cup, which commences on July 29, as Liga MX takes a month-long break for the inter-league tournament. Chivas is set to face Red Bull New York RB, Charlotte, and Cincinnati, while San Luis will compete against Timbers, Real Salt Lake, and Minnesota. This dramatic victory provides Chivas with a strong foundation as they transition to the international competition.
