And Just Like That… It’s Over: ‘Sex and the City’ Franchise Concludes After 27 Years

After nearly three decades of martinis, Manolos, and musings on love and life in New York City, the final chapter for Carrie Bradshaw and her friends is officially being written. Showrunner Michael Patrick King has confirmed that the ‘Sex and the City’ sequel, ‘And Just Like That…’, will conclude with its current third season, bringing the entire beloved franchise to an end after almost 27 years.

The news marks the end of an era that began with the premiere of ‘Sex and the City’ in 1998. According to a statement from King, the decision to wrap up the series came to him organically during the creative process. “It became clear to me while writing the last episode of And Just Like That Season 3 that this might be a wonderful place to stop,” the 70-year-old director and writer explained. The announcement was intentionally held back, he noted, to allow viewers to experience the final season without the shadow of its conclusion looming over it. The two-part series finale is scheduled to air on August 14, serving as the definitive end to the saga.

The stars of the show have shared their emotional goodbyes with fans. Sarah Jessica Parker, who has embodied the iconic Carrie Bradshaw since the beginning, posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. Alongside a montage of her character’s most memorable moments, she wrote, “Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all.” Reflecting on a journey that spanned six seasons of the original show, two feature films, and three seasons of the reboot, she added, “This chapter is complete.” Parker also extended her gratitude to the cast and crew, describing the experience as “the greatest kind of hard work alongside the most extraordinary talent of 380 that includes all the brilliant actors who joined us.”

Kristin Davis, who played the ever-optimistic Charlotte York, also expressed her feelings on social media. “I am profoundly sad. I love our whole beautiful cast and crew. 400 artisans working so hard on our show with deep love,” Davis wrote on Instagram. She offered a sincere thank you to the loyal fanbase, stating, “We love you forever and ever.”

The ‘Sex and the City’ franchise, created by Darren Star, first aired from 1998 to 2004 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its candid exploration of female friendships and sexuality. Its success led to two blockbuster films and the 2021 reboot ‘And Just Like That…’ on Max. The sequel continued to be a major topic of conversation, tackling new life stages and introducing new characters while navigating daring plotlines, including the death of Mr. Big and the brief, much-anticipated return of Samantha Jones.

King, who has been a primary creative force throughout the franchise’s run as a writer, director, and executive producer, summed up the journey of the reboot. “We took something familiar and did make it new,” he said. “For better and for worse.” As fans prepare to say their final goodbyes, the legacy of four friends navigating the complexities of life in the city that never sleeps is set to be cemented in television history. The final episodes of ‘And Just Like That…’ air on Max on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
