Legendary sportscaster Brent Musburger, whose voice has narrated some of American sports’ most iconic moments for over five decades, is set to receive a prestigious honor. At 86, Musburger will be presented with the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award, a recognition of his long and meritorious contributions to the world of sports broadcasting.
Fans will have a chance to hear his familiar voice once again during a special appearance on NBC’s broadcast of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. According to reports from NBC Sports, Musburger will be interviewed by Maria Taylor during the pregame show and will then join announcers Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth in the booth for the second half of the game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions.
Musburger’s storied career began in 1968 after he transitioned from a sportswriter for the Chicago American to a broadcast role with CBS. He joined CBS Sports in 1973, and by 1975, he became the face of the network’s groundbreaking pregame show, The NFL Today. It was here that his signature opening, “You are looking live…,” became a Sunday ritual for football fans across the country. During his 17-year tenure at CBS, he was a ubiquitous presence, covering the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, The Masters, and the World Series. He is also widely credited with popularizing the term “March Madness” during his coverage of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Following a surprising departure from CBS in 1990, Musburger seamlessly transitioned to ABC Sports and ESPN, where he began a new 27-year chapter. He became the definitive voice of college football for a generation, calling seven BCS National Championship games and anchoring ABC’s popular Saturday Night Football. His dramatic call of Doug Flutie’s “Hail Mary” pass in 1984 remains one of the most famous plays in college football history. His down-to-earth, conversational style made viewers feel like they were watching the game with a knowledgeable friend, though his candid commentary occasionally drew criticism, most notably during the 2013 BCS National Championship Game.
In 2017, Musburger announced his retirement from play-by-play broadcasting at ESPN, but he was far from finished. He moved to Las Vegas and embraced the burgeoning world of sports gambling, co-founding the Vegas Stats & Information Network (VSiN), the first multi-channel network dedicated to sports betting analysis. He served as the network’s lead broadcaster and managing editor, proving once again his ability to stay at the forefront of sports media trends. He also returned to the booth as the radio play-by-play announcer for the Las Vegas Raiders from 2018 to 2022.
Raised in Billings, Montana, Musburger is a member of the Montana Broadcaster’s Association Hall of Fame. The Pete Rozelle Award is a fitting capstone to a career defined by its remarkable longevity, versatility, and impact. As he steps into the broadcast booth in Canton, it serves as a reminder of the indelible mark he has left on the industry and the countless memories he has helped create for sports fans everywhere.
