Yankees Bolster Bullpen, Acquire Reliever Jake Bird from Rockies

The New York Yankees have made a significant move to strengthen their bullpen ahead of the trade deadline, acquiring right-handed reliever Jake Bird from the Colorado Rockies. The trade, confirmed on July 31, 2025, sends prospects Roc Riggio and Ben Shields to Colorado in exchange for the 29-year-old pitcher.

Bird, a former fifth-round pick by the Rockies in 2018, brings a live arm and several years of team control to the Bronx. In 45 appearances for Colorado this season, he has posted a 4-1 record with a 4.73 ERA over 53.1 innings pitched. He has demonstrated impressive strikeout ability, fanning 62 batters for a rate of 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Over his four-year career with the Rockies, Bird has compiled an 11-10 record with a 4.57 ERA and 212 strikeouts across 230.1 innings, according to Baseball-Reference.

While his surface-level ERA may seem high, the Yankees’ front office likely sees significant underlying potential, a common theme in their pitching acquisitions. Bird’s numbers have been heavily influenced by playing his home games at the notoriously hitter-friendly Coors Field. Interestingly, his 2025 home/away splits are counterintuitive; he has a stellar 2.48 ERA at Coors Field but has struggled on the road with a 7.40 ERA, per ESPN. However, advanced metrics suggest a more promising picture. According to Baseball Savant, Bird’s expected ERA (xERA) for the 2025 season is a much more palatable 3.59, indicating he may have been the victim of some bad luck and is due for positive regression, especially away from the unique conditions of Denver.

The Yankees are betting that pitching coach Matt Blake can help Bird harness his raw talent, which includes a sweeper, sinker, and curveball. His high strikeout rate and team-friendly contract make him an attractive asset for a team with championship aspirations. Bird is currently signed to a one-year, $770,000 contract for the 2025 season. As part of the deal, the Rockies will retain $525,740 of his salary, leaving the Yankees to pay just $244,260 for the remainder of the season, as reported by Spotrac. He is under team control through 2028, being arbitration-eligible for the first time in 2026.

In return, the Rockies receive a pair of prospects to aid their rebuilding efforts. The headliner is second baseman Roc Riggio, a well-regarded prospect in the Yankees’ system known for his bat. The move to Colorado could provide him with a clearer path to the major leagues. They also acquire pitcher Ben Shields, adding another young arm to their farm system.

This trade represents a classic deadline move for both clubs. The Yankees, firmly in contention, add a cost-controlled, high-upside arm to their bullpen for the stretch run and beyond. For the Rockies, who currently sit at 28-80, the trade allows them to capitalize on a valuable relief asset to acquire young talent for the future. As reported by MLB Trade Rumors, the deal was first announced by Jack Curry of the YES Network, with Mark Feinsand of MLB.com confirming the prospects involved. Bird will now join the Yankees’ bullpen as they continue their push for a World Series title.
