NBA Veteran Marcus Morris Sr. Arrested on Fraud Charge in Florida

NBA veteran Marcus Morris Sr. was arrested on a fraud charge in Broward County, Florida, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, according to a report by TMZ Sports. The 13-year league veteran was taken into custody, and authorities in Florida have since released his mug shot. As of the latest reports, law enforcement has not provided further details regarding the specific nature of the fraud charge.

Morris, a Philadelphia native born on September 2, 1989, has had an extensive career in the National Basketball Association. He played college basketball for the University of Kansas, where he was named the Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in 2011. He was then selected as the 14th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets, just five minutes after his identical twin brother, Markieff Morris, was drafted 13th overall by the Phoenix Suns. The Morris twins notably made history on March 9, 2013, becoming the first set of twins to start for the same NBA team while playing for the Suns, a fact highlighted by Wikipedia.

Throughout his career, Marcus Morris Sr. has played for several NBA franchises, including the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Cleveland Cavaliers. He last appeared on an NBA court during the 2023-2024 season, splitting his time between the 76ers and the Cavaliers. Over 832 career games, he has averaged 12.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, as per Basketball-Reference.com and NBA.com. His career high in points came on January 5, 2020, when he scored 38 points for the New York Knicks in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

This is not Morris’s first encounter with legal issues. In 2012, he entered a diversion program following a battery charge. More notably, he and his brother Markieff were involved in an aggravated assault case in 2015, stemming from an alleged brawl in Phoenix. Both brothers were acquitted of the assault charges in October 2017. These past incidents, particularly the 2015 case, were cited as factors in his trade from the Suns to the Pistons in 2015, according to Wikipedia.

Beyond the court and legal challenges, Morris has also been recognized for his community contributions. On January 11, 2024, he was awarded the key to the City of Philadelphia for his work with the Family Over Everything Foundation, an organization he co-founded with his brother to assist underserved communities. His most recent NBA transaction saw him briefly re-sign with the New York Knicks on September 15, 2024, only to be waived on September 28, 2024.

The current fraud charge adds another layer to the complex public profile of the seasoned NBA player. As investigations continue, the basketball world awaits further details on the allegations against Marcus Morris Sr.
