New York Yankees Acquire Versatile Infielder Amed Rosario from Washington Nationals

The New York Yankees have further bolstered their infield depth ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, acquiring veteran utility player Amed Rosario from the Washington Nationals. The deal, announced on Saturday, July 26, 2025, sends right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter and 18-year-old outfielder Browm Martinez to Washington.

Rosario, 29, joins the Yankees after a stint with the Nationals where he posted a .270 batting average with five home runs, 18 RBIs, and a .736 OPS in 158 plate appearances this season. His career statistics reflect a consistent hitter, with a .273 average, 68 home runs, 384 RBIs, and 110 stolen bases across 988 games. Known for his versatility, Rosario has played various positions throughout his nine-year Major League career, including shortstop, second base, and outfield. This season with the Nationals, he primarily featured at third base (24 starts) and second base (16 starts), also making appearances at shortstop and right field.

The acquisition of Rosario comes just a day after the Yankees traded for third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies. The Yankees are expected to utilize Rosario primarily in a platoon role at third base, particularly against left-handed pitching. Rosario boasts a strong .299 batting average and an .816 OPS against southpaws this season, providing a favorable contrast to McMahon, who has struggled against lefties with a .207/.289/.310 slash line. His ability to play multiple infield positions, excluding first base, offers manager Aaron Boone significant flexibility.

For the Washington Nationals, the trade brings two promising prospects into their system. Clayton Beeter, a 26-year-old right-handed pitcher, was ranked as the Yankees’ No. 20 prospect by MLB Pipeline. Beeter was originally a supplemental second-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 and was acquired by the Yankees in the 2022 trade that sent Joey Gallo to Los Angeles. He made his Major League debut in 2024, appearing in three bullpen games, and had two relief appearances earlier this month for the Yankees, giving up six runs over 3 2/3 innings before being optioned to Triple-A. In 18 appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year, Beeter recorded a 3.10 ERA with 33 strikeouts and 16 walks over 20 1/3 innings.

Browm Martinez, an 18-year-old outfielder, was signed by the Yankees out of the Dominican Republic in January 2024 for $130,000. He has shown significant potential in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .278 with a .386 on-base percentage in 38 games in 2024. This year, Martinez has improved his slugging, posting an impressive .404/.507/.632 line with four doubles and three home runs in 18 games.

Rosario expressed enthusiasm about joining a playoff-contending team, stating, “I feel great because whenever teams are in playoff contention, they always acquire me towards the end.” This marks the third consecutive year Rosario has been moved near the trade deadline, highlighting his value to teams looking to add depth for a playoff push. Since the end of the 2023 season, Rosario has played for five different MLB teams: the Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers (second stint), Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, and now the New York Yankees. He is currently playing on a one-year, $2 million contract for the 2025 season and is set to become a free agent in 2026.

The Yankees’ latest move underscores their commitment to strengthening their roster as they vie for a postseason berth, while the Nationals continue to build for the future by acquiring young talent.
