Syfy/USA Network’s ‘Resident Alien’ Concludes After Four Seasons, Creator Promises Satisfying Finale

Fans of the beloved sci-fi comedy-drama Resident Alien are facing a bittersweet farewell as Syfy and USA Network have announced the show’s cancellation after its current fourth season. The series, starring Alan Tudyk as a crash-landed alien masquerading as a small-town doctor, will air its final episode on August 8, which will serve as the series finale. This news comes as a disappointment to many who have followed the quirky adventures of Harry Vanderspeigle.

The cancellation was confirmed by multiple U.S. media outlets, including The Economic Times, Decider, and Deadline. While the news is disheartening for its dedicated fanbase, series creator and showrunner Chris Sheridan revealed that he had anticipated this outcome. In an interview with TV Insider, Sheridan stated, “I knew going into it that this was likely going to be our final season. Creatively, that was exciting because I knew we could spend the time wrapping up some storylines and driving toward an ending.” He expressed immense pride in the fourth season, particularly the finale, calling it “probably my favorite episode of the series.”

Sheridan also offered a glimmer of hope for the future of the Resident Alien universe, promising that the August 8 finale will provide “a very satisfying ending while also leaving the door cracked open for any future this world may have.” This suggests that while the current run is ending, the possibility of a revival or continuation in some form is not entirely off the table, a sentiment that may offer some comfort to heartbroken viewers.

The show, based on the comic book series of the same title by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, first premiered in January 2021 on Syfy. It quickly garnered a loyal following for its unique blend of humor, heart, and sci-fi elements, centered around Alan Tudyk’s charismatic portrayal of the misanthropic alien Harry. The series also featured a talented ensemble cast including Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds, Alice Wetterlund, Levi Fiehler, Elizabeth Bowen, and Meredith Garretson, who brought the quirky residents of Patience, Colorado, to life.

Resident Alien had previously faced a close call with cancellation after its third season. It managed to secure a renewal, albeit with a reduced budget and a network shift from Syfy to its sister NBCUniversal cable network, USA. The fourth season premiered on USA Network in June. However, despite a boost in awareness from previous seasons’ availability on Netflix, the show’s fresh episodes reportedly saw modest ratings amidst a general decline in cable viewership and struggled to gain significant traction on NBCU’s streaming service, Peacock, according to Deadline.

The current fourth season has seen Harry, along with his baby Bridget, imprisoned on the Grey Moonbase, while a shape-shifting Mantid alien impersonates him back on Earth. The plot has also delved deeper into the lives of Asta and D’arcy, who are hiding a dangerous secret from Ben and Kate, and Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv’s investigation into a string of bizarre, non-human deaths in Patience. Fans eager to catch the remaining episodes can watch Resident Alien Fridays on USA Network, with new episodes available to stream on Peacock a week later. The series finale is scheduled for August 8.

As Resident Alien prepares to take its final bow, it leaves behind a legacy of smart storytelling, memorable characters, and a unique comedic voice that resonated with many. While the end of its run is undoubtedly sad for its fans, the promise of a satisfying conclusion from its creator ensures that Harry’s journey will conclude on a high note, with a potential future still lingering in the cosmic distance.
