Starlink Experiences Major Global Outage, Prompting Widespread Disruption and Speculation

Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, experienced a significant global outage on Thursday, July 25, 2025, leaving thousands of users without connectivity. The disruption, which peaked with nearly 60,000 reported issues on DownDetector.com around 3:30 p.m. EDT, affected customers across the United States and other parts of the world.

Reports of the outage flooded in from diverse locations, including Maryland, Washington D.C. area, Northern California, rural central Texas, East Central Indiana, Porterville CA, Tennessee, Florida, and Colorado in the US. Users in Afghanistan and Italy also reported service interruptions. The widespread nature of the outage quickly drew attention on social media platforms like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), where users sought confirmation and shared their experiences.

Starlink officially acknowledged the disruption on its website and through its X account. A statement read, “Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution. We appreciate your patience, we’ll share an update once this issue is resolved.” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk later addressed the situation, stating, “Service will be restored shortly. Sorry for the outage. SpaceX will remedy root cause to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

Adding to the frustration for many users, Starlink’s own website and status page were also impacted by the outage, displaying “no healthy upstream” errors. This made it difficult for customers to get real-time updates or troubleshoot their connections directly from the company’s official channels, leading to a surge in traffic on third-party monitoring sites and social media.

While Starlink has not yet disclosed the definitive root cause of the outage, discussions among network engineers and affected users on platforms like Hacker News have put forth several potential explanations. A leading theory points to a botched software or configuration update that was rolled out too quickly across the network. Such updates, if flawed, can lead to cascading failures in complex distributed systems.

Other technical explanations include issues with core networking protocols like Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) or Domain Name System (DNS). Experts noted that BGP misconfigurations can swiftly take an entire global network offline, while DNS failures can prevent systems from locating necessary services. Some users observed their Starlink terminals rebooting multiple times, receiving new public IP addresses, or the Starlink app showing a software update stuck at 75% progress, lending credence to the software/configuration update theory.

The possibility of a cyberattack was also raised, particularly given Starlink’s critical role in providing internet connectivity in conflict zones, such as Ukraine. Precedent for such attacks exists, with Russia having successfully hacked and bricked Viasat user terminals at the start of the Ukraine war. However, there has been no official confirmation or evidence linking the Starlink outage to malicious activity. The incident also coincided with reports of service disruptions affecting major telecom operators in the UK and other parts of Europe, leading to some speculation about a broader, coordinated action, though this remains unconfirmed.

For millions of people in rural and remote areas, Starlink serves as essential, often sole, broadband access. The outage highlighted the reliance of these communities on the satellite service. While outages were more common in Starlink’s early years, the last major global disruption was reported on May 28, 2024, making this incident particularly notable for its scale and impact.

As of late Thursday, some users reported that their service had been restored after manual reboots of their terminals or after the Starlink app successfully completed software updates. The company continues to work on remedying the root cause to prevent future occurrences, as stated by Elon Musk.
