Mets Stage Thrilling Comeback to Defeat Angels 7-5 in Series Opener

The New York Mets orchestrated a dramatic late-game rally on Monday night, overcoming a four-run deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 7-5 at Citi Field. The victory, witnessed by an attendance of 41,442, marked the Mets’ 57th win of the 2025 season and gave them a 1-0 lead in the three-game series against the Angels.

The Angels started strong, quickly building a commanding lead against Mets starter Kodai Senga. In the top of the second inning, catcher Logan O’Hoppe launched his 18th home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, putting Los Angeles on the board first. The Angels extended their lead significantly in the third inning. Taylor Ward delivered a crucial two-run double to left field, scoring Mike Trout and Luis Rengifo, and advancing to third on a throwing error by Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor. Jo Adell followed with an RBI single to right, bringing Ward home and pushing the Angels’ lead to 4-0. Senga’s outing was cut short after just three innings, having surrendered four earned runs on four hits and three walks.

The Mets began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brett Baty connected for his 11th home run of the season, a two-run blast to center that also scored Jeff McNeil, narrowing the Angels’ lead to 4-2. Angels starter Tyler Anderson, despite giving up four earned runs over six innings, kept the Mets offense largely in check through the middle frames.

The pivotal moments arrived in the seventh and eighth innings. In the top of the seventh, Taylor Ward continued his strong performance for the Angels with an RBI single that scored Nolan Schanuel, extending their lead to 5-2. However, the Mets responded emphatically in the bottom half. After Francisco Alvarez walked and Luisangel Acuna singled, Francisco Lindor hit a fielder’s choice that scored Alvarez. Juan Soto then stepped up with a clutch two-run single to center, bringing home Lindor and Acuna, and tying the game at 5-5. The Mets completed their comeback in the eighth inning, capitalizing on Angels’ miscues. Ronny Mauricio reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Brett Baty to score on a fielding error by O’Hoppe, giving the Mets their first lead of the night at 6-5. Brandon Nimmo then added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Alvarez and making it 7-5.

Mets reliever Brooks Raley (1-0) earned the win, pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Jose Fermin (2-1) took the loss for the Angels, despite the runs being unearned due to the error. Edwin Diaz secured his 20th save of the season for the Mets, striking out three batters in a dominant ninth inning to close out the game. For the Angels, Taylor Ward was a standout performer, going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

With this win, the New York Mets improved their record to 57-44, placing them just 0.5 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies (57-43) in the National League East standings. The Los Angeles Angels, now 49-51, remain 8 games back in the American League West. The Angels had entered the series hoping to continue their push for a wild-card spot, but this loss puts further pressure on their playoff aspirations as the trade deadline approaches.

In other MLB action on Monday night, the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 4-1, extending their home winning streak to a franchise-record 11 games, thanks to a key two-run double by Bo Bichette and seven strong innings from Kevin Gausman. The Cleveland Guardians also secured a 10-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, highlighted by José Ramírez’s three-run homer. Meanwhile, the Washington Nationals held off the Cincinnati Reds in a high-scoring 10-8 contest.

The Mets and Angels will continue their series on Tuesday night at Citi Field, with the Angels looking to even the score and the Mets aiming to build on their impressive comeback victory. Fans can follow the action on ESPN, CBS Sports, and MLB.com.
