Urgent Nationwide Recall: Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Mislabeled, Posing Severe Peanut Allergy Risk

Urgent Nationwide Recall: Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Mislabeled, Posing Severe Peanut Allergy Risk

Mondelēz Global LLC has issued a voluntary nationwide recall for several varieties of its popular Ritz Cracker Sandwiches. The recall, announced on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, is a precautionary measure due to a critical mislabeling error that could pose a serious, life-threatening risk to individuals with peanut allergies. While the outer cartons are correctly labeled, some individually wrapped cracker sandwiches inside may be mislabeled as the cheese variety when they actually contain peanut butter.

The Core Issue: Mislabeled Individual Packs

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement, the recall affects specific carton sizes of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches and the Ritz Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack. The concern arises because film packaging rolls, due to a supplier error, may have caused individual peanut butter sandwiches to be wrapped in packaging intended for the cheese variety. This means that while the larger carton correctly states “contains peanuts” as an allergen advisory, the individual inner packs might misleadingly display “cheese,” potentially leading to accidental consumption by those with peanut sensitivities.

The company emphasized that this recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution, and as of the announcement date, no injuries or illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported. Corrective actions are reportedly being taken to prevent future occurrences of this packaging error.
