Matt Reeves’ Bat-Verse Expands: ‘The Batman Part II’ Script Complete, Future Projects Revealed

Renowned filmmaker Matt Reeves, celebrated for his distinctive approach to genre storytelling, continues to shape the cinematic landscape with his ambitious projects. Recent news confirms a significant milestone for fans of his gritty take on the Caped Crusader: the script for The Batman Part II is officially complete, receiving high praise from DC Studios co-head James Gunn.

Gunn, speaking on the red carpet of the Superman world premiere on July 7, 2025, confirmed he had read Reeves’ highly anticipated script, simply stating, “It’s great.” This confirmation follows Reeves’ own reveal last month, when he shared a photo of the completed script’s cover page adorned with the iconic Batman symbol. The sequel, which will see Robert Pattinson reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, is slated for release on October 1, 2027. Reeves previously indicated in January that filming for the much-anticipated follow-up would commence this year, promising a story that continues from the first film while surprising audiences.

Reeves’ vision for Batman exists within its own distinct narrative, often referred to as the ‘Batman Epic Crime Saga,’ which is separate from James Gunn’s newly launched DC Universe (DCU) ‘Gods and Monsters’ phase. This allows Reeves the creative freedom to craft a more personal and grounded take on the character. The success of The Batman (2022), which he directed, co-wrote, and produced, grossed an impressive $770.8 million worldwide and garnered critical acclaim, boasting an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Beyond the main film trilogy, Reeves is actively expanding this Bat-verse through various spin-off projects. He serves as an executive producer on The Penguin, a limited series for HBO that sees Colin Farrell return as Oswald “Oz” Cobb. Additionally, the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader, co-developed by Reeves, J.J. Abrams, and Bruce Timm, found a new home on Amazon Prime Video with a two-season order after being dropped by HBO Max. This series premiered on August 1, 2024, further diversifying the Batman content under Reeves’ purview.

Reeves’ career trajectory showcases a consistent ability to deliver critically and commercially successful films across different genres. He first gained widespread recognition for co-creating the WB drama series Felicity (1998–2002) with J.J. Abrams. His directorial breakthrough came with the hit monster film Cloverfield (2008), followed by the acclaimed vampire drama Let Me In (2010). He then helmed the highly successful science-fiction sequels Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), both of which received strong critical reception, with the latter achieving a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Looking ahead, Reeves’ production company, 6th & Idaho, has a packed slate. He is developing a television series adaptation of Diane Cook’s novel The New Wilderness and is set to produce the Netflix film The Hunt for Atlantis. Other upcoming projects include an English-language remake of the Russian sci-fi film Sputnik, the Netflix vampire film Smile, and a limited series about Buster Keaton starring Rami Malek. Notably, Reeves is also collaborating with DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran to produce additional Batman-related projects within the broader DCU, such as the animated film Dynamic Duo and a standalone Clayface film, further cementing his significant influence across the DC cinematic and television landscape.
