Matt Cameron Departs Pearl Jam After 27 Years

In a significant development for the rock music world, legendary drummer Matt Cameron has announced his departure from Pearl Jam after a remarkable 27-year tenure. The news, confirmed on July 7, 2025, through statements from both Cameron and the band, marks the end of an era for the iconic Seattle group.

Cameron, a revered figure in grunge and alternative rock, shared his sentiments on social media, expressing profound gratitude for his time with Pearl Jam. “After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” Cameron stated. He extended his “much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.” He concluded by thanking “the crew, staff and fans the world over,” calling it “an incredible journey” and promising “More to follow.” The reason for his departure was not disclosed by either party. Pearl Jam, comprising Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Eddie Vedder, reciprocated Cameron’s sentiments in their own statement. They lauded Cameron as “one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skinyard and the mighty Soundgarden,” and acknowledged his early contributions, “playing on our first demos in 1990.” The band emphasized that Cameron has been “a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer,” who “propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings.” They concluded by stating, “It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.” (Rolling Stone, Variety)

Cameron joined Pearl Jam in 1998, stepping in for Jack Irons during the *Yield* tour. Initially a temporary arrangement, his role quickly became permanent, making him the band’s longest-serving drummer. His first studio album with Pearl Jam was 2000’s *Binaural*, and he contributed to every subsequent release, including their most recent, 2024’s *Dark Matter*. Beyond his drumming, Cameron also contributed significantly as a songwriter, with credits on tracks like “Evacuation,” “Save You,” “Cropduster,” and “You Are.” Eddie Vedder himself has praised Cameron’s songwriting, noting that the band often had to “run to find step stools in order to reach his level.” (Wikipedia)

Before his extensive tenure with Pearl Jam, Cameron was a foundational member of Soundgarden, playing with them from 1986 to 1997 and again during their reunion from 2010 to 2017. His drumming graced classic albums such as *Badmotorfinger* and *Superunknown*. He was also part of the supergroup Temple of the Dog, alongside future Pearl Jam bandmates. His versatility and unique style, characterized by creativity, power, and precision, earned him a spot at No. 52 on Rolling Stone’s 2016 list of the “100 Greatest Drummers of All Time.” Cameron is a two-time inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, first with Pearl Jam in 2017, and slated for induction with Soundgarden in 2025. Andrew Watt, producer of Pearl Jam’s latest album *Dark Matter*, lauded Cameron as a “fuckin’ drum god,” emphasizing that “No one else could sit down and play those drum parts.” Cameron’s departure comes after Pearl Jam concluded their year-long *Dark Matter* world tour in May 2025. While his next steps remain “to follow,” as he hinted, the music world eagerly awaits what this powerhouse musician will pursue next. His legacy within both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam is undeniably immense, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of rock music. (Rolling Stone)
