Michael Madsen, Iconic Actor Known for Tarantino Collaborations, Dies at 67

Veteran actor Michael Madsen, celebrated for his distinctive roles in Quentin Tarantino’s films and a career spanning over four decades, has passed away at the age of 67. Madsen was found unresponsive at his home in Malibu, California, on Thursday, July 3, 2025. His publicist, Liz Rodriguez, confirmed his death to ABC News, stating that he is believed to have died of cardiac arrest, with no foul play suspected, according to Los Angeles County deputies.

Madsen’s managers, Susan Ferris and Ron Smith, also released a statement alongside Rodriguez, highlighting his recent work: “In the last two years Michael Madsen has been doing some incredible work with independent film including upcoming feature films Resurrection Road, Concessions and Cookbook for Southern Housewives, and was really looking forward to this next chapter in his life.” They added that Madsen was also preparing to release a new book titled ‘Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems.’ His representatives described him as “one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, who will be missed by many.”

Born on September 25, 1957, Michael Madsen embarked on his acting journey in 1982 with the film Against All Hope. He quickly rose to prominence, building an extensive filmography of over 300 credits. He became a familiar face to audiences worldwide through his frequent collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino. His memorable performances include the chilling Mr. Blonde/Vic Vega in 1992’s Reservoir Dogs, Budd in the Kill Bill films, Joe Gage in The Hateful Eight, and Sheriff Hackett in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Beyond Tarantino’s universe, Madsen also left his mark in acclaimed films such as Ridley Scott’s 1991 classic Thelma & Louise and Sin City.

Reflecting on his iconic role in Reservoir Dogs, Madsen told ABC News in 2017 that he felt “very lucky and very blessed” to be part of the film, noting that Tarantino allowed him to improvise significantly, including the famous dance scene to “Stuck in the Middle with You.”

Madsen’s final years were marked by significant personal challenges. In January 2022, his son, Hudson Lee Madsen, died by suspected suicide in Hawaii at the age of 26. Hudson, who was married and serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, left his family “heartbroken and overwhelmed with grief and pain,” as stated by a representative for Michael Madsen to Today.com. Michael Madsen expressed his shock to the Los Angeles Times shortly after his son’s death, stating, “I didn’t see any signs of depression. It’s so tragic and sad. I’m just trying to make sense of everything and understand what happened.” He recalled his last text from Hudson being, “I love you dad.”

Following this tragedy, Madsen’s personal life continued to face turmoil. He filed for divorce from his third wife, DeAnna Madsen, in September, claiming they had been separated since January 2022. Court documents initially contained accusations against DeAnna regarding their son’s mental health struggles and described their relationship as “abusive, dependent, and toxic.” Madsen was also arrested for battery of a spouse prior to these filings. However, weeks later, Madsen issued an emotional statement on social media, retracting his claims and apologizing. He stated, “Losing a child is the hardest and most painful experience that can happen in this world. I deeply apologize for not correcting this earlier but I love my wife and our other 4 children and have no desire for divorce or blame.” He clarified that his wife had “absolutely nothing to do with what happened to our son” and described Hudson’s death as a “horrible loss.” While the divorce filing remained active, Madsen dropped his request for a restraining order against DeAnna, as reported by The Sun.

Michael Madsen was married three times. His first marriage was to Georganne LaPiere (1984-1988), followed by Jeannine Bisignano (1991-1995), with whom he had two sons, Christian and Max. He married DeAnna Madsen in 1996, and they had three sons: Calvin, Luke, and Hudson.

In a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Madsen reflected on the dual nature of fame, acknowledging its blessings and “heavy things.” He noted, “I think people really fear me. They see me and go: ‘Holy s—, there’s that guy!’ But I’m not that guy. I’m just an actor. I’m a father, I’ve got seven children. I’m married, I’ve been married 20 years.”
