USA Advances to Gold Cup Semifinals After Dramatic Penalty Shootout Victory Over Costa Rica

The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) secured a dramatic victory over Costa Rica in the Gold Cup 2025 quarter-finals, prevailing 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout after the match ended in a 2-2 draw. The highly anticipated clash, held on June 29, 2025, at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, saw both teams battle fiercely for a spot in the semifinals.

The match kicked off with an early setback for the hosts. In the 12th minute, Costa Rica was awarded a penalty after Kenneth Vargas was fouled in the box. Defender Francisco Calvo stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, giving “La Sele” an unexpected 1-0 lead (AS.com, ESPN Deportes). The USMNT had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 37th minute when they were awarded a penalty, but Malik Tillman’s shot struck the left post, much to the dismay of the home crowd (AS.com). However, just before halftime, Diego Luna found the back of the net in the 43rd minute, leveling the score at 1-1 and providing a crucial boost for the USMNT heading into the break (AS.com).

The second half began with immediate impact from the United States. Only two minutes after the restart, in the 47th minute, Max Arfsten scored, putting the USMNT ahead 2-1 (AS.com). The lead, however, was short-lived. Costa Rica, under the guidance of coach Miguel “Piojo” Herrera, continued to press, and their efforts paid off in the 71st minute when Alonso Martínez scored, bringing the score back to 2-2 (AS.com). Despite a dominant 63.8% possession for the USMNT and 18 shots compared to Costa Rica’s 7 (ESPN Deportes), neither team could find a winning goal in regulation, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

The penalty shootout proved to be a showcase for both goalkeepers, Keylor Navas of Costa Rica and Matt Freese of the United States. Navas, a veteran presence, made two crucial saves, but it was Freese who emerged as the hero for the USMNT, making three spectacular saves against Juan Vargas, Francisco Calvo, and Andy Rojas (AS.com). Freese, who confidently stated, “Penalties are my thing, I practiced them all week and was prepared if we needed it,” lived up to his words (AS.com).

For the United States, Tyler Adams, Malik Tillman, Alexander Freeman, and Damion Downs successfully converted their penalties. Downs’ decisive kick sealed the 4-3 victory for the USMNT, sending them to the semifinals (AS.com). Costa Rica’s successful penalty takers were Alonso Martínez, Santiago van der Putten, and Jefferson Brenes (AS.com).

USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino had expressed confidence in his team while acknowledging the challenge posed by Costa Rica, stating they would “compete with what we think is best to win the game and it will be very competitive” (AS.com). Meanwhile, Miguel Herrera had aimed to break the USMNT’s impressive 15-game unbeaten streak in the Gold Cup, a feat that ultimately eluded his side (AS.com).

With this hard-fought win, the United States advances to the Gold Cup 2025 semifinals, where they are set to face Guatemala (ESPN Deportes). The match, played in front of an attendance of 32,289 fans (ESPN Deportes), underscored the competitive nature of the tournament and the resilience of the USMNT.
