Eagles Acquire Jaelan Phillips in Blockbuster Trade

Eagles Make Major Defensive Splash Ahead of Trade Deadline

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a significant move to bolster their defense, acquiring edge rusher Jaelan Phillips from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick. This trade, finalized on November 3, 2025, marks the Eagles’ third major defensive acquisition in the past week, signaling an aggressive approach as the NFL trade deadline on November 4 at 4 p.m. ET approaches.

Trade Details and Compensation

The Eagles sent their original 2026 third-round pick to the Dolphins for Phillips. Notably, Miami will cover a portion of Phillips’ remaining salary for the season, a factor that likely facilitated the deal and allowed the Dolphins to secure a higher draft pick in return. Phillips, a former first-round pick (18th overall in 2021), is currently playing on his fifth-year option and is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025 season.

Eagles Address Defensive Needs

Philadelphia’s defense has faced challenges this season, ranking 23rd overall and 24th in sacks. The team has been actively seeking to improve its pass rush, especially after offseason departures like Josh Sweat and Bryce Huff, a triceps injury to Nolan Smith (who is on IR but expected back as early as Week 10), and the sudden retirement of Za’Darius Smith in October. The acquisition of Phillips is a direct response to these needs, providing an immediate boost to the defensive line.

A key factor in the trade is Phillips’ reunion with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Phillips had one of his most productive seasons under Fangio when he served as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator in 2023, recording 6.5 sacks in just eight games. This familiarity is expected to allow Phillips to integrate quickly and effectively into the Eagles’ scheme.

Jaelan Phillips: A Career Marked by Potential and Perseverance

Phillips, 26, has demonstrated immense talent throughout his career, though it has been punctuated by significant injuries. After a standout rookie season in 2021 with 8.5 sacks and 42 tackles, he followed up with seven sacks in 2022. His 2023 season was cut short by a torn Achilles, and he subsequently tore his ACL in Week 4 of the 2024 season, missing the remainder of that year.

Despite these setbacks, Phillips has shown resilience. In the current 2025 season, playing for the Dolphins, he has recorded 3.0 sacks, 3.0 tackles for loss, and 25 total tackles in nine games. His ability to generate pressure, even when sack numbers aren’t elite, makes him a valuable addition to the Eagles’ rotation of edge rushers, which now includes Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Josh Uche, Brandon Graham (who rejoined the team), Patrick Johnson, and Jihaad Campbell.

Dolphins’ Rebuild and Interim Leadership

For the Miami Dolphins, the trade signals a clear shift towards a rebuild. With a 2-7 record, the team recently parted ways with longtime general manager Chris Grier, promoting Champ Kelly to interim GM. Phillips, being in the final year of his contract, was an ideal trade candidate for a team looking to acquire future assets. The Dolphins are reportedly considering further moves involving other veterans as they re-evaluate their roster.

Eagles’ Active Deadline Week

The acquisition of Phillips caps an active week for the Eagles, who have been aggressive in upgrading their defense. Prior to Phillips, Philadelphia also traded for cornerbacks Jaire Alexander from the Baltimore Ravens and Michael Carter II from the New York Jets. These moves underscore the Eagles’ commitment to strengthening their secondary and pass rush as they aim for a deep playoff run.

The Eagles (6-2) are set to face the Green Bay Packers (5-2-1) in Week 10 on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 8:15 p.m. ET. Phillips is not currently on the injury list and is expected to be available for his debut with the team, providing an immediate impact against a formidable opponent.
