Alcaraz Shrugs Off Injury Scare to Dominate in Tokyo

Overcoming an Ankle Scare

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz has quelled concerns over his fitness with a commanding performance at the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships, advancing to the semifinals despite a recent injury scare. The Spanish phenom looked to be in significant trouble after awkwardly twisting his left ankle during his opening match on Thursday, but showed no ill effects in his subsequent outings.

On Saturday, Alcaraz delivered a clinical performance to defeat Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-4, 6-3 in just 79 minutes. He moved freely around the court, dispelling any doubts about his physical condition. Following the victory, Alcaraz was quick to credit his medical team, specifically his longtime physiotherapist, Juanjo Moreno.

“I said before and I’m going to say it again, I have the best physio in the world who I trust 100%, and the work he has done for the ankle, I think, has been great,” Alcaraz stated. “I could play, I would say, normally. I was worried about some movements on the court where I could feel the ankle, but in general I think I played a great match.”

A Season of Milestones

Alcaraz continued his dominant run by defeating American Brandon Nakashima in the quarterfinals. The victory was not just another step towards a potential title in Tokyo; it also marked his 65th win on the ATP Tour this season. This impressive tally matches his career-best for wins in a single season, which he set in 2023. With several tournaments still left in the year, he is on pace to set a new personal record.

The 22-year-old is now set to face Casper Ruud in the semifinals. This latest success in Tokyo is part of a spectacular 2025 campaign for Alcaraz, who is chasing a tour-leading eighth title of the season. His major accomplishments this year include winning his sixth and seventh Grand Slam titles at the French Open and the US Open.

His performance throughout the year has solidified his position at the top of men’s tennis, largely defined by an era-defining rivalry with Italy’s Jannik Sinner. As reported by digitaltrendstoday.com, the two have battled in multiple high-stakes finals, pushing each other to new heights and captivating the tennis world.

Looking Ahead: Davis Cup and Beyond

With the season heading into its final stretch, Alcaraz shows no signs of slowing down. He has already signaled his intention to represent his country in the Davis Cup Finals in November. “ATP Finals and then the Davis Cup, I want to be in top form to see if we can get it,” he confirmed, highlighting his commitment to Team Spain.

His busy schedule extends into the offseason, as he is set to participate in the inaugural Miami Invitational in December. The exhibition event, held at the home of the Miami Marlins baseball team, will see Alcaraz face off against fellow rising star Joao Fonseca. The event will also feature a women’s match between Emma Raducanu and Amanda Anisimova.

As he continues his quest for the Japan Open title, Carlos Alcaraz has once again demonstrated the resilience and determination that have become his trademarks. Brushing off a potentially serious injury, he has continued to play at an elite level, adding more milestones to an already historic season and cementing his status as the undisputed leader in men’s tennis.
