Facebook’s $725M Settlement Payouts Are Arriving

Millions of Facebook Users to Receive Payments

After a lengthy legal process, millions of Facebook users in the United States who filed claims in a landmark privacy lawsuit are finally set to receive their share of a $725 million settlement. The distribution of funds began in September 2025, marking the culmination of a case that brought global attention to digital data privacy.

The class-action lawsuit was filed against Facebook’s parent company, Meta, following revelations in 2018 that the personal data of up to 87 million users was improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica. The political consulting firm, which worked with Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, used the data for political advertising. The lawsuit accused Meta of allowing third parties to access user data without consent and failing to adequately monitor that access. While Meta did not admit to any wrongdoing as part of the settlement, the company agreed to the substantial payout to resolve the claims and avoid a prolonged trial.

Who is Eligible for a Payout?

Eligibility for the settlement was broad, but required proactive claim submission. The key criteria for inclusion were:

  • Being a U.S. resident with a Facebook account at any point between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022.
  • Submitting a valid claim form by the deadline of August 25, 2023.

Individuals who held an account during this period, even if it was later deleted, were eligible to file. The settlement attracted a record-breaking 28 million claims. According to legal representatives, approximately 17 to 18 million of these claims were validated and approved for payment, as reported by digitaltrendstoday.com.

Payment Timeline and Distribution Details

The path to payment was delayed by two legal appeals filed after the settlement received initial approval in 2023. These appeals were resolved on May 14, 2025, and the settlement was officially finalized on May 22, 2025. On August 27, 2025, the court ordered the distribution of benefits to commence.

Angeion, the firm administering the settlement, confirmed that payments began rolling out in early September 2025. The distribution is scheduled to occur over a 10-week period. Claimants with approved claims will be notified via email three to four days before their payment is issued. Payments will be sent using the method selected on the claim form, with options including direct deposit, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, a virtual prepaid Mastercard, or a paper check.

How Much Can You Expect to Receive?

The individual payout amount varies for each claimant. Of the total $725 million fund, a significant portion was allocated to legal fees and administrative costs. Court documents show that approximately $181 million was awarded to the plaintiffs’ attorneys. The remaining net settlement fund, estimated to be around $540 million, is being distributed among the eligible class members.

The amount each person receives is determined by a point-based system. Each claimant earns one point for every month they had an active Facebook account within the eligibility period. Therefore, users with a longer history on the platform will receive a larger share of the settlement. While amounts will differ, legal experts estimated in 2023 that the average payout would be approximately $30. Users can check the status of their claim by contacting the settlement administrator with their claim ID.
