UCLA Football in Turmoil Amid Losses and Fan Disconnect

A Season of Discontent for the Bruins

The UCLA Bruins football program is grappling with a multifaceted crisis just two games into the 2025 season. An 0-2 start, marked by a 43-10 blowout loss to Utah and a 30-23 defeat at the hands of UNLV, has left the team reeling. However, the problems extend far beyond the scoreboard, touching on fan engagement, player conduct, and the very identity of the team in the modern era of college football.

A Roster of Strangers Fuels Fan Apathy

One of the most significant issues plaguing the program is a growing disconnect between the team and its supporters. The current roster is largely unrecognizable to even the most dedicated fans, a consequence of massive turnover via the transfer portal. The team welcomed 57 new players this season, including 37 transfers, leaving many longtime season ticket-holders struggling to identify who is on the field without constantly referencing a roster on their phones.

“I didn’t recognize any of the numbers,” lifelong fan Jorge Morales told the Los Angeles Times after the UNLV game. This sentiment is widespread, with many fans expressing a feeling of disinterest. The issue is compounded by head coach DeShaun Foster’s decision to severely restrict media access during the preseason, limiting opportunities for fans to learn about the new players. When asked about the lack of access for human-interest stories, Foster stated, “we’re trying to win games.”

The Quarterback Conundrum and Off-Field Troubles

At the center of the on-field struggles is quarterback Nico Iamaleava. After a high-profile transfer from Tennessee, his performance has been underwhelming. Through two games, Iamaleava has completed 40 of 63 passes for 391 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. His struggles are magnified when compared to Joey Aguilar, the quarterback who replaced him at Tennessee, who has thrown for 535 yards and five touchdowns without an interception in the same span. This has led some to label Iamaleava’s situation a cautionary tale of the NIL and transfer portal era.

The team’s challenges were further compounded by off-field issues. On September 10, it was reported that backup quarterback Pierce Clarkson, 21, was arrested on a felony charge. The Los Angeles Times reported the charge was suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Clarkson was released after posting a $30,000 bond and has been suspended from all team activities indefinitely, pending the outcome of the legal process.

Looking Ahead Amidst the Storm

The Bruins are desperate for a victory as they prepare to host the New Mexico Lobos (1-1) at the Rose Bowl. Despite their winless record and internal turmoil, UCLA enters the Friday night contest as a 15.5-point favorite. However, the combination of a weekday game, a non-power conference opponent, and the team’s poor performance has led to concerns about a record-low attendance.

While the football program faces a daunting schedule that includes a November 15 matchup against new Big Ten foe Ohio State, as reported by digitaltrendstoday.com, other parts of the UCLA athletic department are finding success. In a contrasting note of positivity, the No. 24 ranked women’s volleyball team recently secured a dominant sweep over UTEP with set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-20, handing the previously unbeaten Miners their first loss of the year. This victory serves as a reminder of the broader athletic excellence at the university, even as its flagship football program navigates one of its most challenging periods in recent memory.
